My story

**$470 in pledges to any rescue that may pull!** **New behavioral notes & Video 6/26!** Mike ACCT-A-222059 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Mike must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by SUNDAY, JUNE 29TH at 10AM. Should Mike’s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Mike came to ACCT Philly on June 3rd after being found as a stray. Mike is a big, bashful sweetheart who's been navigating the shelter experience with quiet courage. Though he started off fearful—startled by new sounds and hesitant with handling—he’s made steady progress thanks to patient care and gentle volunteers. On walks, Mike has shown a tendency to jump up or mouth hands out of excitement, but this quickly calms once he gets his wiggles out. After just a bit of exercise, he transforms into a snuggler who enjoys sitting on benches, leaning in for pets, and even resting his head in your lap. He accepts treats gently, enjoys back scratches, and frequently checks in with his handler while walking. Mike would thrive in a calm, adult-only home with people who understand how to support a sensitive dog. Due to his length of stay, Mike is urgently seeking placement with a resume partner or adopter. VIDEOS: *NEW* Meet timestamped Mike: https://youtube.com/shorts/YmSAPCaFQPY?si=X-6_Oig9KqN7r71K Mike and Pearl Meet: https://youtube.com/shorts/6fuW5kK-T70?feature=share BEHAVIOR: Per staff on 6/26: SOOO SWEET. Gives hugs very lovey. Low key walker, easy to leash. Needs training but seems eager to learn. Definitely needs training. He will try to jump on people walking by so have a close leash. Gentle and handsome. Per staff 6/24: Mike is a big boy weighing 91 pounds, but he was so good on leash! He came out of kennel with no issues and was a little jumpy at first, but was very gentle. By the time we got to the back of the shelter, he was fine on leash and only pulled slightly towards the other dog. They sniffed each other. Per walksheet 6/23: Mild issues with mouthing and jumping, “big hugger, some mouthiness.” Per volunteer 6/22: When I took Mike out, he hadn't been walked by a volunteer in over 3 days. I had no issue leashing him, but once he exited his kennel, he was jumpy. For the first few minutes of our walk, Mike frequently looked up to me and stopped to jump up or mouth one of my hands. Mike would immediately stop this behavior when I ignored him. His jumping and mouthing really calmed down after walking for a little while. In fact, he was very relaxed after a short walk. After a little exercise, Mike sat with me on the bench. He even cuddled up beside me and buried his head in my lap. When we weren't on the bench, Mike would lie down and roll onto his side for back scratches. He allowed for pets and scratches all over. Mike would sit calmly for treats and was very gentle when accepting them. When we walked again, Mike would often gaze up at me and nuzzle his nose against my hand--no longer jumping. He mostly walked at my side and would accidentally bump into my leg. Mike appeared interested in meeting every person that we passed. I had no problem returning him to his kennel. Per walksheet 6/10: Mild issues coming out and with shyness, “super sweet, staff member helped coax out, very good boy.” Per walksheet 6/8: Moderate issues coming out and with shyness, “friendly, greeting, chest pets okay, hand shy overhead.” Per volunteer 6/7: When I arrived at the kennel, Mike was sitting on his elevated bed. He had wide eyes. I opened the door slightly and called him over. He slowly got off the bed and walked to the front of the kennel. I introduced my leash and he flinched back. I talked to him with some baby talk and offered treats. He was not interested in the treats. I put my hand in the kennel. He did move forward and accepted some small pets. He sat in the front corner of the kennel. He had his ears back and wide eyes. After a few attempts, I was able to lasso him. I attempted to baby talk to encourage him out of the kennel. I used some leash pressure but he wouldn’t budge. I decided to remove my leash and grab a higher value treat. I returned to the kennel with some cheese. I offered him the cheese which he took in his mouth, chewed and then spit out. I continued to give him some small pets and he leaned in closer. I lassoed him again and with leash pressure I was able to get him out of the kennel. Mike walked through the kennels with a sniff, scrunched body and tucked tail. Outside, Mike continued to display behaviors aligned with being fearful. He walked okay on leash but would flinch at any sudden movement or sound. He sniffed around and showed no interest in the handler. He did not accept any treats or toys. He continued to have a mostly tucked tail, wide eyes and his ears back. On the way inside, Mike pulled back to his kennel. He jumped right in and I was able to slowly remove his leash. Experienced Blue due to issues removing from kennel and fearfulness at the shelter. Per staff 6/5: Timid butt warms up. Per staff 6/4, playgroup: Nervous, somewhat steerable, tolerant, neutral, keeps to himself, avoidant. Per finder: Good on leash, pulls. Friendly. MEDICAL: NEW!
