I’ll be 2 years old in October, so I’ve outgrown the wildest puppy phase—but I still have plenty of energy, curiosity, and cuddles to give! I LOVE other dogs—playing with them is one of my favorite things to do! I’d thrive with a playful dog sibling or even a tolerant older pup who can help guide me. I’ve also got a soft spot for kids and will gently cuddle up next to them (though I do best with children 5 and up who understand big dog energy). I’m a total sweetheart, and nothing makes me happier than being part of a family. I’m crate trained and potty trained, but I’d really prefer to be out of the crate if possible—I'm respectful when left alone for short periods, especially if I have a comfy spot and a dog buddy. I know “sit,” “come,” “off,” and “no” (though please say that one gently—I’ve likely had a rough past and can get a little scared). I’m working on “stay,” “lay down,” and “drop it.” I’m great on leash, unless a squirrel dares to cross my path! I’m very treat motivated, especially when Milk-Bones are involved, and I love all kinds of toys—from tug ropes to stuffies (but you’ll need to keep an eye out, because once the stuffing comes out, I might try to snack on it!). I don’t have separation anxiety, and I’m not destructive, but I can sometimes mistake a pillow for a toy—oops! A gentle correction and redirection works just fine with me. My ideal forever home would have: 🏡 A tall fenced yard (I love chasing birds and squirrels) 🐕 Another dog or older kids to play with 👨👩👧👦 Someone home often—I’m happiest with company 🚘 Bonus: I ride like a champ in the car and will just chill in the back seat! One of the cutest things I do? If you’re lying on the couch, I’ll gently rest my head on your chest and wag my tail, just happy to be near you. I’m loyal, loving, playful, and ready to find a family who will give me the kind of gentle love and companionship I’ve always deserved. If that sounds like you—I’m already wagging my tail! — Onyx 🖤 This dog is currently located in Chicago's southwest suburbs and can be seen by appointment once an adoption application is completed and approved by the rescue. Please note that we cannot hold dogs for any reason. If the dog or puppy is not yet fully vetted, we can only consider applications from adopters within an hour's drive or 40 miles of Lemont, IL, due to required vet visits at our partner veterinarians. For fully vetted dogs or puppies, we welcome applications from out-of-state or beyond the 40-mile radius. Please only apply if you are ready to meet and welcome a new companion into your home within five days of approval. Breed and Age Information: Unless the puppy was born in our care, we cannot guarantee the breed or age. Breed and age estimates are based on veterinary advice, shelter records, physical appearance, and information provided by previous owners. The adoption fee includes: Spay/neuter (performed at one of our partner veterinarians as scheduled by the rescue) Microchip Rabies vaccine DHPP vaccine Bordetella vaccine 4DX test (Heartworm, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichia, Lyme Disease) General wellness care, including deworming, heartworm prevention, and flea/tick prevention Your adoption fee also helps support medical care for other rescue animals, including heartworm treatments, surgeries, and emergency care. Spay/Neuter Policy: We spay/neuter dogs at 16 weeks or older, at the discretion of the rescue and in consultation with our partner veterinarians. While some veterinarians recommend delaying the procedure based on a breeds projected size, as a rescue, our primary goal is to prevent unwanted litters. Spaying and neutering also provide significant health benefits, including cancer prevention and reducing behavioral issues. The American Animal Hospital Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association support pediatric spay/neuter for cats and dogs as early as 16 weeks. We carefully assess each case to determine the best timing for the procedure. Interested in Adopting? Submit an adoption application at www.rubywhiskers.org/adopt
