Lola is about 10 months old and made her way to us from our local animal care and control. We went into our intake shelter to volunteer and of course we couldn't leave without hearing "Can I show you guys someone who might need you?" Lola was in the employee only section, not because of her behavior but because she was so scared. She was an owner surrender and confused on why she had been left behind at a place that was so overwhelming for a girl like her. She needed to be carried and hid her head. Once she was out of the shelter, and I mean as early as in the parking lot, it is like a switch flipped and she was her. We now had a puppy who knew she was SAFE. Since then we have realized that Lola was not set up for success in her previous home, but thankfully her foster is 100% behind her and giving her every chance to gain confidence and succeed. We just need someone with the same dedication to take a chance on her in her forever home. Lola is shy, she'll bark when she meets you because she isn't aware that everyone is as nice as the people she already knows and trusts. If you go slow with her, she'll slowly become your best friend. Give kisses and ask for love. She is potty trained and gives signals by the door when she needs to go out. In a new environment this will need a bit of time to come back but she will learn! She is doing well in her crate. If she has anything to say about it all she needs is you to sit by her side while she settles for a few minutes or even toss a cover over her. Her confidence level outdoors needs some work, which thankfully she is getting everyday. We can assume she didn't have a lot of contact with dogs or other people and so she gets scared. She enjoys walks in a nice empty trail. If she's in a busier neighborhood she does need treats and a confident handler. We do believe she would be happier the suburbs or at least a less trafficed neighborhood. We have been doing cowalks with her and a few different dogs and she is improving each time! We don't think that her reactivity comes from a place that will stay or from being aggressive, it comes from a place of uncertainty and when she has confidence in her handler she is so interested in meeting a new friend. We can't wait till see gets to learn that friends are good and she'll love playtime. So her adopter has to be willing to meet her where she is at and continue training and building a bond. If you would like to be considered for Lola apply directly. If you have any questions before applying please email adopt@chicagorescueauthority.org. We are willing to do an adoption trial for her to ensure that she is set up for success. Her adoption fee includes her spay, up to date vaccines and prevention, and microchip. She is currently being fostered in Chicago and available for adoption within 3 hours.
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Lola, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
