My story

Meet Melillo: Toy Collector, Kiss Giver, Heart Stealer At around 6 years old and 60 pounds, Melillo (affectionately called Millie or Mills) is everything we love about senior-ish shepherds: loyal, affectionate, and delightfully quirky. She’s the kind of dog who will follow you from room to room, always ready to offer a kiss, a tail wag, or just her quiet companionship. And yes — she almost always has a soft toy in her mouth, which is as adorable as it sounds. Millie has low-to-moderate energy and would love a fenced yard to stretch her legs and run when the mood strikes. Indoors, she’s a laid-back sidekick who enjoys lounging near her people. She’s house-trained, knows basic commands like “sit” and “come,” and while she sometimes forgets her size and barrels through doors like a queen, she’s eager to please and would thrive with continued positive-reinforcement training. Socially, Millie is a sweetheart who loves adults and has done well with calm, respectful dogs after slow introductions. She is currently living with a small dog and doing great. She hasn’t been around cats, and due to some previous sensitivity during recovery from surgery, we are recommending a home without small children. A calmer, experienced home would suit her best. Millie is crate-trained but does require a heavy-duty crate if being left alone. She prefers the company of her people and might be happiest in a home where someone is around often or where she has a mellow canine companion. Medical Notes: Millie had surgery to treat chronic mastitis and is now spayed. The removed tissue showed hyperplasia — not actual cancer — and her vet believes her risk for future issues is low. She’s also finishing up treatment for an ear infection and continues to do great in foster care. Oh, and squirrels? Millie has a lot to say about those. She has a strong prey drive and will let every critter in the yard know it — so leash walks and yard time should be well-supervised! Millie’s Ideal Home:     •    Fenced yard required     •    No small children     •    Experienced dog owner     •    Submissive or calm dog companions OK     •    A love for soft toys encouraged but not required Millie is the kind of dog who will make you smile every single day. Whether it’s her signature head tilt, her toy collection, or her affectionate kisses, she’ll quickly become the most lovable part of your routine. If you’ve got a soft spot for shepherds and a quieter home to share, Millie just might be your perfect match. Apply to meet Melillo today — your new best friend is waiting. ———————————————————- The adoption donation for Melillo is $250. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped, current on vaccines and on flea/tick/heartworm prevention (age appropriate). If you would like to meet this dog, you must have an approved application on file and be willing to travel to the Mahoning County, Ohio area for a meet and greet. All of our dogs reside in foster homes. We do not have a physical shelter. Applications will be reviewed/approved and each dog will be placed in the home that can best meet their individual need. If you live in a residence with a Homeowner’s Association (HOA) please make sure you check that the dog you are interested in does not violate size or breed restrictions. A successful adoption is our goal. Submitting an application does not guarantee adoption of any dog. We require you call your established veterinarian asap to schedule a wellness visit. —————————- Our applications can be found by clicking on the “adoption application” link at https://apaprescue.com Our primary form of communication is email. Please check your spam/junk folder so you don’t miss any emails! We do send an email confirming we received your application but please be patient. It is not an auto response. It must be sent manually. Our email is run by volunteers and is not monitored 24/7. We recommend using a computer, laptop or tablet to fill out the application. Questions do not always show up in full on a phone. Leaving a field empty will result in the application not processing. If you get a grey screen, scroll up or down to see which field you left blank. Follow the prompt to continue. ————— **IMPORTANT ** Please note that when you use the “start an inquiry/introduce yourself” feature it is NOT an application to adopt. Don’t waste your time clicking on it! Adoption donation policy effective 1/1/23: Under a year - $350 cash/check $360 PayPal/Venmo Adult (1-9) - $250 cash/check $260 PayPal/Venmo Senior (10+) - $200 cash/check $210 PayPal/Venmo We apologize for the inconvenience of a service fee if you are using PayPal or Venmo. Each year we lose hundreds of dollars for their service fees, and their fees continue to rise. Every dollar matters and those lost dollars means less dogs we can fund and help. We are a 100% volunteer group that utilizes foster homes. We do not have a shelter/building. Thank you for understanding.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Melillo, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
