My story

Where are our HOUND LOVERS??? Jethro is looking for a HERO! Jethro entered the shelter at the end of June as a stray and we felt certain he would be reclaimed fairly quickly as he appears to be a pure-bred Black and Tan Coonhound. We are guessing he is about 3 years old and almost 70 pounds. He’s been vaccinated, microchipped and neutered, but during the make ready process, we discovered he is sadly heartworm positive AND has entropion in both eyes - a condition where the eyelid, usually the lower one, rolls inward, causing the eyelashes and fur to rub against the cornea (the front surface of the eye). This irritation can lead to pain, inflammation, and potential damage to the eye.The good news is that BOTH of these conditions are totally treatable – the heartworms can be cured but the entropion will require surgery. We are submitting this case for a grant to cover all of the costs, but Jethro is going to need a FOSTER or ADOPTER so he has a place to call home during treatment and recovery. While he has not been with us long enough to do very many meet and greets with other dogs, he has seemed friendly and easy going in passing with other dogs and regardless, he’ll need to be kept separate from other dogs during treatment and recovery. Jethro is a typical HOUND – he will follow his nose off a cliff so a secure fenced in area is a MUST. Hounds are also typically not recommended for homes with cats, as they have a VERY high prey drive. Hounds are working breeds, so they do need an above average amount of mental and physical enrichment and stimulation to stay happy and healthy. We cannot move forward on treatment until we secure a foster home – ideally, a “Foster to Adopt” situation would be best if we can find him a home who can get him through his surgery and heartworm treatment. His foster or adoptive home needs to be close enough to make regular visits to our Vet of Record, Creekview Vet Clinic near downtown New Braunfels. We have already reached out to several breed specific rescues and have not gotten any response, so we are going to try to take care of this guy ourselves – BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP! Foster Applications can be submitted HERE: https://www.hsnba.org/get-involved/foster/dog-fostering but we encourage anyone interested to come by and meet this handsome fellow and see if he might be a good match for your home and lifestyle!HSNBA lists all animals online from the moment of intake, and our listings are updated automatically every midnight. Some of these animals may not be available for adoption at this moment, but you can always call the shelter at 830-629-5287 for clarification on the adoption process or the animal's current status.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt JETHRO, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
