My story

Tortilla arrived at BHS as a stray in late December 2024. When she arrived, she was very unsure of people—nervous, guarded, and not at all convinced we were worth trusting. With time, patience, and lots of gentle socializing from our dedicated staff, Tortilla has made tremendous progress. She might greet you with her signature hiss when you first approach, but don’t be discouraged—this is her way of saying, “I’m not sure about you yet.” Many cats use body language to communicate their comfort level, and Tortilla is no exception. A flicking tail, flattened ears, or a raised paw are all signs she’s feeling unsure or overstimulated. Understanding these signals is key to building a respectful relationship with a cat like her. Tortilla may give a quick slap to say “slow your roll,” but she’s also quick to warm up when approached with calm energy, patience, and—of course—treats.Underneath that torti-tude is a deeply affectionate and loyal cat. Once she decides you`re worth her trust (and yes, she’ll make you earn it), Tortilla becomes incredibly loving. She leans into head scritches, enjoys quiet companionship, and shows her affection in subtle but meaningful ways. For anyone welcoming Tortilla home, a slow introduction to her new space is essential. Set her up in a small, quiet room at first with her essentials—food, water, litter box, and a cozy hiding spot. Let her explore at her own pace. Avoid forcing interactions; instead, spend time in the room reading or talking softly so she can get used to your presence. Gradually, as she grows more confident, you can allow her access to more of the home. This method reduces stress and helps cats like Tortilla feel safe and in control.Tortilla would do best in a calm, indoor-only home with patient humans who understand that she’s not an instant-gratification kind of cat. We believe she could live peacefully with other cats and possibly with older, respectful children who know how to give her space.Tortilla isn’t your average cat—but that just makes her loyalty and love all the more rewarding. If you’re someone who appreciates a cat with personality, intelligence, and just a touch of spice, Tortilla might be your perfect match.
