sweet mama ready for her own family! MARY ELLEN NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Mary Ellen        Best Guess for Breed:    German shepherd mix   Best Guess for Age:   5 years as of June 2025      SEX:   Female   Approximate Weight:   70 lbs   Gets Along With:  Other dogs!  We haven't seen her with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters!   Currently Living at:  South Carolina shelter; needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to get up here.    Special adoption considerations: Mary Ellen is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for heartworms, but landed in a place where heartworm treatment is provided! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to discuss where in the treatment process this Lucky Dog is in right now! Now she gets to start searching for her own humans and lavish all that love and affection upon them. German Shepherds get deeply attached to their people - they're known as Velcro dogs for a reason. Mary Ellen is well out of the puppy yips and as a typical GSD, knows that having her own people, being safe and loved and under her own roof is the most important thing. She's ready to be by your side on all your adventures, offering loyal companionship for all her days. What do you say? Will you be the lucky recipient?
