My story

Meet Jester the white and black mixed breed with heterochromia (two different colored eyes)!Jester came in as a stray so we don’t know much about his life prior to the Shelter. He recently went on a sleepover with a volunteer. She reports: “Jester is very much a cuddle bug. He wants to be as close as possible at all times and is very sweet. We went on a walk and I could tell the outside world (bikes, cars, and people) is still intimidating to him. He seemed pretty nervous on the walk so we opted for more quiet time at home. Jester had no accidents inside but I made sure to take him out often. Also, he saw my cat from a distance and didn’t seem interested in engaging more which was great to see. Overall, he is such a sweet boy who just needs to gain some more confidence to live his best life.”The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
