Shaki is living in a foster home. Please submit an application from our website and/or email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to learn if you are a match! Shaki and her brother Remi have come to us all the way from Puerto Rico. They were found as abandoned little puppies, and taken in by a good samaritan who fostered them while working with a local rescue organization on the island to make sure they stayed healthy. Once the pups were cleared to travel, they made their way to Chicago with a couple of "flight angels" (fliers who volunteer to accompany the puppies in the cabin). From there, they made their way to a foster home with two other dogs and kids. Remi and Shaki were in foster for a week while we completed their vetting. Shaki is now at the shelter awaiting adoption, and she hopes to be back in a home very soon. Remi and her brother Shaki are two peas in a pod. They took separate flights to the States, and were reunited in their foster home after a couple of weeks apart. Shaki was the shyer of the two, and their foster mom said she learned a lot from her brother over the last two weeks. When she first arrived she was so scared and shaking, but warmed up to her foster family of two dogs and two kids quickly because she saw how much Remi loved them. Her foster mom writes, "Everything Remi did she watched and then she just opened up to us. She wouldn’t allow me to put a leash on her at first and when she allowed me to she wouldn’t walk, that’s how scared she was. However, she watched Remi walk with his leash and guess what she started walking too! I would say walking is her favorite thing. Because they both did not like the crate, they are left free in an enclosed room. She loves to play with Remi. She is very playful! She can be a bit much for my two small dogs. She also loves to be outside in the yard. She is more curious of everything (unlike Remi, who likes to observe ) so she loves to explore things and loves to chase birds in the yard. She will do her business on a pee pad and outside too. Once you get to know her you’ll know she’s so loving as can be and very gentle." We hope you will come and meet this sweet and petite island girl soon! Shaki’s adoption fee is $450. This animal is spayed, and up to date on core vaccines. She will need a Heartworm test between 6-7 months of age.
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Shaki, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
