My story

Is Indy a very large 80-pound dog who people might think would be a brave boy? Yes. But is he in reality a big baby who needs lots of praise and someone who can help him build confidence and also another dog to be his constant companion because he really doesn’t like being alone? Also yes. Indy is a shelter staff favorite - he’s our current underdog! - and we’re determined to get this big marshmallow puff of a dog adopted into a home that can give him what he needs. He has so many good qualities, so much potential, and so much love to give! Indy has been adopted a couple times and gone on a couple Adoption Auditions, but he just hasn’t found the right match yet. The good news is that every time he goes out and comes back, we learn a little more about what that ‘right match’ looks like! We’ve learned that: • Indy really does best with another dog-social dog in the home, so much so that we’re requiring he be adopted to a home with another dog. (In homes without another dog, Indy just got so worried and anxious when being left alone that he did some… unauthorized home renovations.) Being with another dog also helps him gain some bravery when doing intimidating things, like going up stairs and going through doorways. • Indy doesn’t seem to have any experience with cats, and when he met them for the first time he did some big barking and tried to chase them, so a home without other cats is best. • He is very tall, and a three-foot fence will simply not contain him, because he has an explorer’s heart and wants to see what’s out there in that big wide world. This may explain how he ended up at the shelter as a stray in the first place, tbh. If his new family has a yard, it needs to have a tall fence for this tall boy. A yard is not a requirement to adopt a dog from FCAS, because no yard means more walks with the family! • Indy doesn’t appreciate new people coming into his home unannounced, and he will do what many dogs do and give some big barks to try and shoo them away. He’ll need proper introductions to visitors! Indy’s new family will need to be ready to provide him with patient, positive reinforcement as he learns confidence and goes at his own pace to really settle in to a new home, and luckily we also know that treats (like cheese!) are highly motivational! If you have another dog-social dog already and really think that Indy could be the missing piece of your family puzzle, come on into our Mic

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Indy, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
