0859 Baxel aka Bagel

My story

Bagel is fostered in Waterloo, Iowa. Bagel is a three-year-old toy Australian Shepherd (14 lbs) who has been through more than his fair share of change in his short life, but he is nows ready for his forever home. He is a former breeder release, followed by a couple of temporary placements, and some time living on how own.  He's spent the past several weeks as a foster, decompressing, learning to trust, and discovering his adorable personality.  Bagel is house-trained and cat-friendly. He gets along well with female dogs and can be a bit selective about male dogs. He is a total goofball when he feels safe.  He loves treats, soft toys, and going for walks. He's still learning that being pet is a good thing, and will melt your heart the first time he comes to you for attention. Bagel is still very much a flight risk. When he’s scared, his first instinct is to bolt. He has spent a good amount of time as a stray and is still a work-in-progress on his recall, so a very secure physically yard or a fully leashed lifestyle is necessary. He has been known to dig under fences, so if he’s in a yard, he should never be left unattended.  Bagel isn't aggressive, but is most comfortable with women and may take longer to warm up to men, especially those who are loud or move quickly. He will bark at unfamiliar men, but with patience, he'll come around. Bagel’s perfect home would be a quiet, calmer environment with someone who understands shy dogs. He is a nervous and cautious boy, but a true velcro Aussie when he gets comfortable.  We recommend no children under 10 years of age for this guy.   Bagel is neutered, up-to-date on all vaccinations, heartworm negative, microchipped and receiving monthly preventatives for fleas, ticks and heartworms.  Proof of heartworm prevention for any current or previous pets is required to adopt from our organization.  For more information on our adoption process or to complete an adoption application, please visit our website at www.MidwestAustralianShepherdRescue.org.
