My story

Nakita - 4 years & 10lbs, Chi Mix, Spayed  This dog is eligible to joing our foster to adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org. Thier Foster Parent Says: "Nakita is honestly a dream dog. She is a very easy dog to be around and only provides joy. She has had 0 accidents, 0 signs of aggression, and 0 destructive behaviors! She is so happy to curl up on the couch during the day, and has slept in bed next to me each night. It has been a seamless transition to open my home to Nakita as she really doesn't require anything difficult in order to be content. She loves a soft blanket or a cozy dog bed and it makes me so happy to see her enjoy these comforts! Some silly quirks :she often sits in adorably silly positions , as if perhaps her back legs are too long to manage. (see pics) she will pick around bits of her meal and leave the bits she doesn't like - apples in this case - and also sometimes make a bit of a mess!  She seems really curious about toys and enjoys watching my Yorkie play fetch with me, but isn't quite sure enough to jump in herself yet. At home, she was nervous at first but quickly learned that she's allowed on furniture and loves to jump up on the couch to curl up, or skitter around between the rooms when she's having a goofy moment of playfulness. However, in the yard she's quite the explorer and immediately felt confident enough to explore behind the trees, sit in the planters, and check under the fence into the neighbors yard (she successfully got into the neighbors yard one time but came back quite quickly. Seemed more like curiosity than desire to escape but still something I've since been extremely aware of!). Nakita is doing well outside - she was very nervous of her leash at first but she's now walking outside. She's a perfect small pup. I will be forever envious of whoever gets to continue witnessing her confidence bloom and her goofy personality shine even brighter!" Level of dog ownership experience needed:INTERMEDIATE: This dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.) Energy levelMEDIUM: Needs a daily 60-90 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)  Cuddle Bug Level : High , sleeps in bed with me and will be on the couch with me but doesn't need to be right on top of me.  Potty Trained : High, zero accidents but I also spend a lot of time in my yard.  Comfy with strangers? Yes Comfortable with Children? Okay for a home with respectful kids. She's gentle.  Social with Other Dogs? Yes! Shows some signs of weariness (growling, showing teeth) around puppies who are too active but nothing concerning. She has lived in a home with another dog. Respectful of Other Animals? (cats, small pets, etc.): Nakita would be okay in a home with a catMouthy Behavior? none  Leash Manners? / Okay in the city?: Yes - she's been working on these things and has made a great amount of progress  Jumping on People to Say Hi? noSeparation Anxiety? Lower - will cry when I leave but settles downCrate training? n/a, don't have one Medical statusHealthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm negative; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake How this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Puerto Rico or Southern California. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.  PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!  This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes. If you have any questions or would like to adopt Nakita, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
