Name: Mary Ellen        Best Guess for Breed:    German shepherd mix   Best Guess for Age:   5 years as of June 2025      SEX:   Female   Approximate Weight:   70 lbs   Gets Along With:  Other dogs!  We haven't seen her with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters!   Currently Living at:  DC area foster home   Special adoption considerations: Mary Ellen is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for heartworms, but landed in a place where heartworm treatment is provided! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to discuss where in the treatment process this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!   Mary Ellen is Looking For:   Sweet Mary Ellen was a wonderful mother to her puppies Olivia and Ben, and they went off to get their forever homes. Now she gets to start searching for her own humans and lavish all that love and affection upon them. German Shepherds get deeply attached to their people - they're known as Velcro dogs for a reason. Mary Ellen is well out of the puppy yips and as a typical GSD, knows that having her own people, being safe and loved and under her own roof is the most important thing. She's ready to be by your side on all your adventures, offering loyal companionship for all her days. What do you say? Will you be the lucky recipient? Does Mary Ellen start her new chapter with you?    What My Foster Says About Me: I know it's easy to say this about every pup at Luck Dog, but Mary Ellen is truly the sweetest, most calm, loving girl. Mary Ellen loves snuggling up for naps on the couch and her favorite place is snugged up right next to me. When she’s off leash in a closed-in yard or park, she always stay within a few feet of me to make sure I’m ok - very much in line with the GSD Velcro personality. Mary Ellen seems like an old soul, she’s past the high energy stage of a GSD, but still loves a walk and an adventure with you. She’s not very interested in toys or bones I provide, but LOVES treats. I’ve never met a pup that loves her crate so much! I leave the crate door open for her with a fluffy blanket in it and she’ll often go in and nap there versus the couch. Sometimes she even puts herself to bed at night before I can! She’s really great on her leash, she never pulls, just walks calmly beside me - even when Miss Crocodile tries to play with her while walking on leash!   Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken.  All of our dogs are working on their crate training.  TO ADOPT:    The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.  If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog   Lucky Dog Animal Rescue does our best to provide accurate information about the dogs we have for adoption.
