Mabel

My story

Mabel is a precious young retriever mix discovered as a stray a few weeks ago with her close companion, a dachshund named Evie. With time and patience, her rescuer gained her trust and lured her inside until she could be brought to the shelter. Mabel clearly has had a rough go of it until very recently. Not only was her skin covered in ticks and raw and red in some places with missing fur too, she's clearly hand shy. It's difficult not to speculate about people being unkind to her in her past, and we will never really know. But what we do know is that with just a couple of short weeks of persistent kindness here at the shelter, Mabel is blossoming. She gets happier to see her new friends every single day. She's starting to show her personality and signs that she wants to play. Mabel is estimated at being about 1 year old and is pretty much at her adult size - a mere 40 lbs. Her energy level seems to be medium-low; as she gains confidence and as we get to know her more, we will update her profile to reflect what we learn. For now, she and Evie receive consistent daily meals, their itching and tick-ridden skin has been treated and soothed, and they spend their days at the shelter cuddled up with each other and napping or playing outside. While we'd be ecstatic to welcome a home that would take them both so they can continue their adventures together, we recognize that placing two dogs together is difficult. Although they lean on each other for comfort, never fight, and seem very affectionate towards each other, they are in all likelihood not truly bonded.
