My story

Apply to Adopt Me! Meet Otis, a medium energy, 17-lb., approx. 10-year-old male chihuahua mix who is a friendly and energetic boy. Although he is not playful with other dogs, Otis likes playing with soft toys and stuffies, and an occasional fuzzy tennis ball, and frequently and cutely loads them up into his bed to have them all to himself. He will join you on the couch for some brief snuggles before settling in at your feet in his doggy bed. He has a cute little skip in his gait that can be seen from behind as he is hurrying to go outside. Otis will bury his head in your lap or press into your legs for pets, especially in the morning. He takes treats softly when prompted with “easy or gentle.” He is your shadow as he follows you from room to room. He gets very happy when his people return home, exhibiting yips and dancing around in excitement.   He is making progress with house training and would do best with someone who can provide frequent potty breaks for him; belly bands inside have been helpful with a marked improvement after his neuter. Otis sleeps in an open crate all night in the bedroom, but would also love to sleep in the human bed with his person. He doesn’t need to be crated when left alone since he is not destructive. He gets along well with his small and medium sized foster fur sisters, but he hasn’t been introduced to cats while with our rescue. Otis rides well in a car safely tethered in. He is working on his leash skills with the help of a Martingale collar as he tends to pull some, so a fenced yard may be helpful while he is learning. He greets everyone with enthusiasm and will alert to unfamiliar sounds, but is not a big barker. Exposure to kids has gone well, but it is preferred he go to an all-adult home or if the home has kids, they be older and respectful. He may be a little growly in the beginning at his new home when being picked up or given a bath, but that gets better as he gets used to his new people and home.  Otis is a good eater and prefers to eat by himself in case a fur sibling believes Otis wants to share his food. Although he likes to hang out close to his people, he should be watched closely with an open door in case he decides to slip out for an adventure.  Otis takes medication for a heart murmur, and x-rays revealed only a mildly enlarged heart. He had severe dental disease but had recent dental surgery where he had 12 teeth extracted, but he still has a good number of teeth left. Otis is waiting for his forever family. If you live in the Central Florida/Orlando area and believe you have the perfect home for Otis, please complete an app and tell us more about you. August 9, 2025, 9:42 pm

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Otis, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
