Minnie

My story

Minnie is a 5-year-old Border Collie mix weighing about 40 pounds. She’s incredibly sweet at heart, but also very fearful and reactive, so she needs a patient, experienced adopter who will give her the time and guidance she needs to continue building trust. Her foster has been working with her, and with consistency and patience, she is making progress—but her future family will need to continue that work so she can keep growing. Minnie thrives when she can be close to her person, whether cuddled up in bed or snuggled on the couch. Bonding this way helps her feel secure and helps her connect more quickly. She’s not a candidate for crate sleeping, as it has become more of a retreat during moments of fear rather than a comfort. She does best when kept on lead with her person until she learns her new home’s routine. She enjoys going on walks or even short jogs, which help her settle, and she’s been practicing being calm with things that startle her, such as doors and drive-through windows. Her ideal home would be a quiet one, and she will do best with a female adopter or in a household where any male present is committed to forming a strong, trusting bond with her. She is more fearful of men but has shown that with time, patience, and kindness, she can lean into them for affection. Because of her sensitivity, we feel she would do best as an only dog. She gets along well with cats and we believe she could live with respectful, dog-savvy children over the age of 8 who understand her boundaries. Minnie is house trained, walks nicely on leash, and has shown no destructive behavior. Like many Border Collies, she shows her herding instincts by sometimes trying to “correct” fast movements. She’s learning that the world isn’t so scary, but she needs an owner who can provide steady reassurance and structure. Minnie has so much love to give—she just needs the right person to help her blossom into the happy, loyal, snuggly companion she’s meant to be. Her minimum adoption fee is $300 plus a $15 fee, if 4 months or older, for rabies registration for McLean County residents. She has been spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, heartworm checked, dewormed, and is on flea and heartworm preventatives.
