My story

For Adoption: Barnaby! Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle. We at PDR believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process. To apply for adoption and for more information on our process and requirements, visit our website at https://pounddog.ca/adoption-info/. Meet Barnaby, a handsome tri-colour beagle with soulful eyes, a silky smooth coat, and a heart as big as his floppy ears. Estimated to be about 4 years old, Barnaby is an easy-going, low maintenance, healthy and happy hound that wants nothing more than to be loved. He currently weighs in at about 35 lbs, which is a little heavier than his ideal weight, so we’ve been helping him to drop a few lbs with mealtime portion control, daily walks, and the occasional play date with one of his doggie friends. Barnaby’s story with us began at a rural pound where he was an unclaimed stray. He came to us with no apparent training under his belt, but to our delight, this little hound has proven himself to be a quick and willing learner. In a short time, he’s come a long way with leash walking, crate training, house training, and even basic commands like “sit,” “wait,” and “come.” He’ll need continued guidance in his forever home, but he’s a bright and eager student. When it comes to personality, Barnaby is the full package: happy, friendly, and enthusiastic about life. He loves his people deeply, adores meeting new faces, and greets everyone with a wagging tail (and sometimes an enthusiastic jump, though we’re working on his manners). He gets along well with other dogs, enjoying a mix of playful romps and relaxed “parallel play,” and he’s always curious without showing aggression. We haven’t yet had the chance to expose him to children, but given his gentle and cheerful nature, we expect he’d do well with respectful kids. One of Barnaby’s greatest joys is going for walks. Whether it’s a quick stroll around the block or a longer outing down to the park, he’s always thrilled to explore, sniff, and take in the world. We’ve typically been taking him two to three times per day, and each time between 15 and 30 minutes. At times, when seeing another dog or person passing by in the distance or across the street, he’ll get excited and stop in his tracks to watch them with great enthusiasm. We’ve found that bringing ourselves down to his level and giving him a calm word and a gentle pat will help him to cool his jets until the excitement passes. We’ve met a handful of smallish dogs when on our walks and these have been friendly, low-aggression interactions. Inside the home, Barnaby is low maintenance and very easy to live with. Mealtime is a breeze, as he is happy eating his dry kibble twice daily. He’s generally quiet, with only the occasional beagle-style howl if something interesting catches his ear. He doesn’t shed much, keeps himself tidy, and happily lounges in his crate or on the couch. At night, he sleeps peacefully in his crate, and during the day he’ll often retreat there for a cozy nap. He has been crated alone through the day for up to five hours without fuss, which keeps him safe and gives him a sense of security. Having him sleep in his crate overnight is a non-issue - he is silent even when situated in another room, and always greets us happily the next morning. Car rides have been a pleasant experience with Barnaby. We’ve transported him in his secured wire mesh crate in our hatchback for up to 30 minute car rides and he’s been alert, but relaxed for the duration. Often he’ll just lie down and wait it out without making any noise or fuss. Barnaby is also a gentleman when it comes to handling and vet care. He’s perfectly fine being checked over, having his ears or mouth examined, and doesn’t fuss about grooming. He’s fully up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, neutered, and in great health. All that’s left is for him to reach his goal weight, which his new family can help him achieve with continued portion-controlled meals and regular walks. On a sad note, Barnaby has been diagnosed with Lyme disease. His previous owner obviously didn’t have him on the preventative which would have ensured he was protected from this disease. Lyme disease is a totally preventable disease that is spread by ticks. This disease is in Southern Ontario and we are seeing more and more of it as each year passes. We are a rescue that Lyme tests all of the dogs we take in for exactly this reason. The good news is that Barnaby is completely free of symptoms and is an otherwise healthy dog. Barnaby has no idea he has this disease and is in every way a happy dog. His adoptive family just needs to be aware of his Lyme status and advise their vet of it and understand that he will test positive for Lyme’s every time he has his heartworm/lyme tests done. Lyme disease cannot be cured, but it is managed quite effectively. Like any dog, Barnaby isn’t entirely without quirks. On occasion, he’s had a nibble at our slippers and gloves, but a firm “no” quickly redirects him, and he’s improving this behaviour every day. He isn’t much for chew toys yet, preferring walks and human attention over stuffed playthings. A family willing to guide him with consistency and patience will find that he learns quickly and rarely repeats mistakes. Because Barnaby is a beagle, he tends to go where his nose takes him, and a securely fenced yard is an absolute must. His sense of smell is his superpower, and he’ll happily follow a scent trail without a second thought for safety. To his credit, he doesn’t seem too concerned with birds or squirrels in the back yard. We saw a rabbit during a walk and even then he didn’t seem all that concerned with it. Nevertheless, a fully fenced yard should be a top priority for any beagle. At heart, Barnaby is a love muffin - cheerful, loyal, and endlessly affectionate. He’ll happily snuggle with you on the couch, join you on neighborhood strolls, and greet every day with enthusiasm and curiosity. In return for a little training and a lot of love, he promises to shower his forever family with devotion, warmth, and beagle charm in abundance. If you’re looking for a sweet, low-maintenance companion who will love you unconditionally and make every day a little brighter, Barnaby might just be your perfect match!
