My story

There are dogs who arrive loudly… and then there’s Xena, who arrived as a whisper - and somehow became a celebration.When Xena first came to AAS, she specialized in corners: cowering, flinching, doing her absolute best impression of “please don’t notice me.” The world was big, loud, and, in her professional opinion, highly suspicious.And then, little by little, she chose to be brave.Now this petite, 32-pound hound is a playgroup superstar - confident, joyful, and even helping other shy dogs (like sweet Creedence) learn that it’s safe to let go and have fun.Xena's personality in one moment: a grumpy beagle gave her a hard stare, followed by a very firm “absolutely not” bark. Xena responded with a tiny, polite kiss on the beagle's mouth… and then bounced away like, “Message received. Still love you. Wishing you continued success.”The beagle, understandably, needed a moment. Then softened. Peace was achieved.That’s Xena -  gentle, respectful, with more emotional intelligence than I'll ever achieve!She recently went on her first outing - great in the car, curious about the world, a little unsure at times - but here’s the thing: she recovers. She checks in with her dog friends like, “We good?” and then keeps going. That’s real courage - not the absence of fear, but the decision to keep walking anyway.In her time with us, Xena has gone from:- shut down to social,- heartworm-positive to healthy,- scruffy to beautifully groomed (thank you Upright's Pup Pawlor),- needing help… to helping others.She’s climbed her mountain.Now she just needs a home.Xena would love another dog to guide and play with - and humans with treats don’t hurt either. More than anything, she’s ready to belong.Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are 9am to noon, every day, including weekends and holidays.Interested?
