Luca is young, around 1 ½-2 years old, and full of young, male cat energy. He is social and enjoys being around people, but he is not a Velcro cat; he is perfectly capable of entertaining himself, but he likes to check in with you periodically to see what interesting thing you’re doing and whether you’re up for playing with him. He loves wand toys, balls that crinkle or rattle, and toys that are red (I don’t know how that’s possible, but it’s really true). His favorite toy is a raggedy chicken kicker toy that he carries all over the house to play with. Luca really loves enclosed spaces; the first thing he does when he enters a new room is to nose into all of the tight spaces to see which ones he can fit himself into. He is a big cat, so he is often disappointed! He uses these spaces not just as a place to sleep but also as a base of operations when he plays: he likes to make lightning attacks on a toy and then retreat back into a hidey hole so that he can set up for the next attack. He is very smart and has learned how to avoid sending his toys under the bookshelf of death where toys disappear—something none of my other cats has ever figured out. When Luca wants love, he will curl up on your lap and purr a deep, loud purr. He will often start purring as soon as you pet him. He loves to be brushed, especially on his cheeks, and will run over when you get the brush out and put his front paws on your legs or lap so that you can get at his face. He is generally happy to be picked up and handled but will give you a little nip if you touch him in a way that makes him uncomfortable. Luca is friendly and interested in other cats, but I don’t think he was raised with them, because he doesn’t seem to understand the language of cats: how to read other cats or how to signal his intentions in a way they understand. That might not be a problem with a mellow cat, but it turned out to be a big problem with my more high-strung resident cats. He tends to get very calm when he is stressed, which means that it can be a surprise when he finally decides to react. I think Luca would enjoy living in a household where there are multiple people who have time to play with him and love him. He’d probably be OK with older children, but I’m not sure about younger ones. I have never really seen him in a stress-free environment, though, so I may be underestimating him. He is a really fun cat, and I think he will blossom in a home where he can fully relax and be his energetic self.
