My story

Adoption Event Schedule Events run from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM every month at these locations: 2nd Saturday, Sacramento - Pet Food Express 3rd Saturday, Modesto - Strand Hardware Store 4th Saturday, Roseville - Pet Food Express Please visit the GCGSR Rescue Page for specific address information. All of our dogs are in foster homes and not in one single kennel location.  Adoption events is the best way to meet several of our dogs at once. Shippo is a 7 year old white male Shepherd. His previous owner suffered from illness and was in hospice care when he surrendered him to the shelter. He may not have been able to care for him well as he only weighed 48 lbs on intake and was missing hair and had hot spots from flea allergies. He also had an eye infection. We have taken him to the vet for his eye and itching. He’ll start getting medicated baths too. He weighed 64 lbs when he left the shelter in mid-January but lost a few pounds and is now 62.3 at a recent vet visit and is still so thin his ribs show easily. This boy loves food but will help himself to anything on the counter if you let him. He’s a happy boy but jumps a lot when excited and will not be good in a home with anyone unsteady on their feet or with small children until this is resolved. He does know a few basic commands and will shake hands with either paw.Shippo met the resident cat and it did not go well so we are saying no cats or small critters for this boy. He is sharing his foster home with alum Belle and current foster boy Danny and does well with them. He is supervised when eating as it isn’t certain if he’d try to protect his food bowl.Shippo needs a home with someone willing to commit to furthering his training and providing him plenty of exercise to burn off some of his energy.Level 2 Understanding Dog Levels Please be sure you understand what a dog of this Level requires. Go to our home page for an explanation of the Dog Rating Levels. Additional Adoption Information For more information and to see when this dog will be attending an Adoption Day, please see our Dogs page on our main website. (Adoption Process) We operate within a reasonable driving distance from the Greater Sacramento area, the Central Valley down to Merced, and Lake Tahoe. A reasonable driving distance is determined by where one of our volunteers is willing to drive within our areas of service. That means we don't adopt out of our area, to Southern California, or out of state. Puppy Requirements We have special Requirements for Adopting a Puppy and a separate Puppy Questionnaire that must be completed on puppies. Please see our Requirements for Adopting a Puppy or email us at info@gcgsr.org for more information. Thank you for visiting! March 10, 2026, 4:54 am

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Shippo, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
