My story

At just 4 months old, Romeo is a handsome young pup with so much potential waiting to bloom! This sweet boy came to us as an unclaimed stray, and while we don’t know much about his early life, we’re excited to help him find the loving home he deserves. Romeo is currently a fairly neutral, easygoing puppy. He’s quiet in his kennel, enjoys his meals (very much!), and hasn’t shown the typical over-the-top puppy zoomies just yet. We suspect that once he settles into a home environment and has time to decompress, his playful and affectionate personality will truly come to life. Let’s Talk About Food Romeo has a great appetite and is very enthusiastic about food. We’ve seen some early signs of possible food and toy resource insecurity, which is not uncommon for puppies who have experienced uncertainty. The good news? At this young age, these behaviors can absolutely be reshaped with the right guidance and consistency. His new family will need to: Incorporate hand feeding and food-based training games Practice “trade up” exercises (trading low-value items for high-value rewards) Use meals as opportunities for training and patience-building Reinforce that good things happen when people (and other pets) are near his food, toys, and treats These exercises should become part of everyday life—not just feeding time—to help Romeo learn that resources are safe and plentiful. With consistency from day one, we are confident he can grow into a secure and well-mannered companion. Home Life & Training Romeo will need: Potty training Crate training (highly recommended, as he may be tempted to counter or garbage surf) Immediate enrollment in obedience classes to help him build strong manners and confidence He is expected to be a large dog when fully grown, making early training and structure especially important. We believe Romeo may thrive in a home with a confident, well-adjusted dog companion who can help show him the ropes. Due to his strong interest in food, homes with very small children (who may have snacks within reach) may not be the best fit. The Bottom Line Romeo is a young pup with a blank slate and so much promise. With patience, structure, and positive reinforcement, he has all the makings of a loyal, loving, and well-mannered big boy. He just needs a family committed to guiding him as he learns that the world is safe, food is plentiful, and he never has to worry again. If you’re ready to invest in a smart, food-motivated pup who will grow into an incredible companion, Romeo is ready to meet you! Please complete an adoption application: https://www.hamilton.ca/home-neighbourhood/animals-pets/adopt-or-foster-pet/adoptions Romeo has an appointment to be neutered on February 24th. He will be ready to go to his forever home after this surgery. Animal adoptions and viewing are by appointment only. This allows our Adoption Staff to spend quality time with each potential home to ensure the most successful matches are made between the animals and their new families. *Please note: we only adopt within Ontario

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Romeo, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
