My story

Thank you for your interest in adopting a cat or dog. We are open for walk in visitors 10am-5pm 7 days a week. NO Appointments needed. Notes from Lucky's foster: Lucky is playful, confident and eats and plays well with others. He’s loving and can be held upside down in your arms without fear. Out of the three littermates, he is the most dominant and is constantly on the move. He has slept through the night from the beginning, but is up and ready when it’s time to eat. Lucky has spent his time in foster indoors within a large x-pen. While inside he has been exposed to a number of sounds – dogs barking ( we have 2 large watch dogs), washer & dryer, vacuum, radio, TV. Nothing seems to upset him. Due to his small size and the extreme heat outside, he has spent most of his time indoors. However, he has been outside in an x-pen in the early morning and at night (when cooler) and has been very comfortable in the yard with all the outside sounds. Lucky learns routines quickly and these are the best things to keep him somewhat in check from bad behavior. He’s very receptive to “redirection” in order to get him refocused on good behavior. He’s smart, food motivated and just needs to learn what is acceptable through positive training. He’s shown no aversion to being in a crate for small periods of time – so crate training would definitely be something to help with avoiding misbehavior – but only for small periods of time. Lucky expends a lot of energy when playing with his littermates so doesn’t require a lot of play time with a human, but this will need to change if he does not have other dogs to play with. When he does play with humans, he is very busy trying to chew shoes, toes, etc. Redirection to toys helps him overcome this. But he is a growing baby and still requires a LOT of sleep. When he gets overly tired he will become bitey and that is a good sign that he needs to be put into his place for sleeping. He does best with a quiet, small space (like an x-pen in a room) as somewhere for him to get good sleep/rest. Based on his cautiousness to new things, best thing is to go slowly introducing him to his new home. Watch for stiffness in his body, tail down and just go slow or revisit whatever it is that is stressing him. Just need to go slow….he’s a baby and it’s an awfully big world out there! He has not started leash training as he wasn’t old enough, nor has he been fully potty trained – even though in the x-pen, he potties at the opposite end of the area using reusable pee pads. He cannot do pee pads, as he started chewing on them while he was in foster. Depending on how his fur grows out, he may require regular grooming – at a minimum around his eyes. Due to the fact that Lucky is and will remain a very small dog, he cannot be left outside unattended for any length of time. He could easily be a target of all the predators that patrol our neighborhoods (owls, hawks, coyotes, bobcats, etc). Best descriptive words for Lucky: Happy, social, adventurous, loving, playful, confident, sensitive, aims to please, can be vocal but will settle Unknown: Lucky has not been by himself while in foster, so he may behave differently if he doesn’t have his littermates until a new routine is established.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Lucky, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
