When it comes to animal resques, birds and reptiles are often overlooked. But they often need care and intervention just like their furry counterparts.

For Heather Pekrul-Gulig, founder and CEO of Lakeshore Avian and Reptile Rescue in Wisconsin, her passion for these special creatures prompted her to create her own rescue just for them.

“Our primary focus is education about exotic birds and reptiles and keeping these animals as pets,” says Pekrul-Gulig. “We care for several species of exotic birds and reptiles as well as provide adoption services to find forever homes for them.”

Funding Is Desperately Needed

The organization’s hard work didn’t go unnoticed. Lakeshore Avian and Reptile Rescue was selected to receive a PetSmart Charities grant. And that money will be a big help.

“The main challenges that exist in our organization are funding and space constraints,” says Pekrul-Gulig. “We are currently operating as a foster-based organization which includes myself and four other fosters in the area. Additionally, providing veterinary care is an essential part of what we do, and vet bills can be high.”

The organization will use the grant to care for the animals, providing them with veterinary attention, food and enrichment. And, it will allow them to continue their marketing efforts, so residents in Wisconsin can find them and use their services.

Meet Jack, the Gecko With a Fighting Spirit

Their work makes a significant impact. Pekrul-Gulig recalls one case that stood out to her: an emaciated leopard gecko named Jack.

“He came to us barely alive, having lived on calcium sand which is terrible for leopard geckos, and severely malnourished,” she says. “He was rail-thin upon arrival, and his body was discolored due to the stress his system was enduring.”

Lakeshore Avian and Reptile Rescue quickly got him the veterinary care he desperately needed and started rehabilitating him.

“Jack grew stronger every day for about a year,” says Pekrul-Gulig. “His colors returned to normal and he got his activity level back to normal.”

Jack recovered so well that he was able to be adopted by a loving family.

“Jack will always remain in my heart with his little fighting spirit and his will to live,” said Pekrul-Gulig. “It was such a privilege to care for him while he was with us.”

Thanks to Lakeshore Avian and Reptile Rescue and financial support from organizations like PetSmart Charities, animals like Jack can get the second chance they deserve.
