We saw what a gem she was and pulled her. She is a great size, about 40 lbs. and is a Shepherd mix, possibly mixed with Australian Cattle dog, due to her compact and smaller size. She looks just like a miniature German Shepherd Dog! Gemma is very pretty, approaches all people in a very friendly way, and loves everyone. A huge plus is her size; she is smallish, compact and agile, whereby an adopter can have a bigger dog feel but within a smaller dog’s body. Gemma is super cute and adorable. She is a must meet! Our rescue vet puts Gemma at about age six. Her markings make her look like she has some gray in the face, but these are merely white spurts within the tri-colored coat. She is NOT an old dog; rather, she behaves like a very young dog, but with some more life experience and maturity. Gemma is a great dog for walks, hiking, camping, and various activities, but she can also chill out and enjoy her crate. She is not destructive, rides well in the car, walks well on the leash, and is not a barker. There are a lot of people out there that will not consider a dog over the age of five; we see this a lot in the rescue movement, which is why it takes a more compassionate soul to reach out. We, in rescue, take that chance; otherwise, we would leave many dogs behind to die. I would like to think that there are still people out there who will consider a slightly older pet because of the great things that that pet will bring to the table. We will keep our fingers crossed for our dear, sweet Gemma! Part of the rescue movement is being open and considering certain dogs that if given the chance, still have hope for a full, satisfying life. Gemma is well-behaved and obedient. As with most shelter dogs, she could benefit from learning commands, but she is very smart and picks things up quickly. She is generally dog social, but does better with small dogs and male dogs. She is moderately playful, and is often found playing with Bugle or Bacon, other dogs here at the rescue. Gemma enjoys some form of mental stimulation, thus the training milieu would be heaven for her. For play, Gemma would do best with an individual dog or dogs, given proper introductions. Gemma is VERY potty trained (however potty reinforcement is needed in any new environment) and also crate-trained, and really does like her crate as a way to decompress and chill out. She does get overly excited when seeing other dogs on walks though, however she is responding to corrections quite well. A confident human leader with some dog experience would be best for Gemma. The best fit for Gemma is in a home as an only dog, or with a properly fitted canine mate. Gemma can also be adopted with either Bugle or Bacon, as she already knows these dogs and gets along with them very well, (though that is not necessarily my wish or my design – please do NOT be dissuaded from asking me about Gemma, Bugle, or Bacon due to this statement). Gemma would be GREAT for a dog that needs to lean on another dog for confidence or leadership, or any other properly fitted canine pal. A home with a fenced-in yard is best, (but all dogs must be primarily indoor pets). A home where daily walks or some form of mental stimulation is her best fit. NOTE: We only adopt dogs as primarily INDOOR dogs. Dogs can go outside to play, potty, to sun themselves at will, but should never be excluded to an outside area. You do not need to give a dog the run of the entire house, and an appropriate sized wire crate works very well during a transitional phase. Gemma is spayed, fully vaccinated, Front-lined, dewormed, and micro-chipped. She has had a vet check, complete with urinalysis, fecal, and blood panel. She was fantastic at the vet.
