Skipper is a lively young gentleman who is estimated to be between 1-2 years old. He was abandoned in our lobby on March 2nd and as his finder hastily left the building, they mentioned that he was found roaming as a stray on their way to a store. He is an absolute love bug and has enjoyed befriending staff and volunteers in the shelter! He is not fond of being in his kennel, but who would be? He enjoys spending time outside and will gladly play with toys, but will also lean in for cuddles and pets. He has a great temperament and will even allow his handlers to lift him back into his kennel with no issues. Many have reported that he walks nicely on leash and has great manners. He has had positive interactions with other dogs in the shelter and may enjoy the companionship of a canine friend. He was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection on March 5th and as of the 14th is still having persistent symptoms, so is scheduled to be on medication until March 28th. During this time, he will need a caring owner who ensures that he is taking his medication and recovering from his doggy cold. Unfortunately our friend Skipper has gone overlooked in the shelter and is now looking for someone to open their heart and home to him! He is the sweetest pup you could ever meet and would love to make your acquaintance. He was barking a lot in his kennel so I figured he needed some out time! He greeted me at the door with a wiggly body and wagging tail. He tried to nose through the door when I opened it but wasn't too pushy. I was able to leash him easily and he hopped right out! He pulled a bit on leash but corrected himself well and stopped pulling. When we got to the covered yard he was very interested in all the new smells! He explored the yard for several minutes before interacting with me. I gave him some pets and he leaned his body into me, soaking it up. I threw some balls for him and Skipper had a blast chasing them, but wasn't interested in bringing them back. He just wanted to zoom around! Skipper would do some laps, then stop to sniff and get pets, and then repeat! He had some energy to get out and had a blast zooming around the yard. On our way back he was walking perfectly, no pulling at all, until he realized where we were going. He stopped walking and refused to continue forward, so I picked him up and carried him to the door. I put him down and he walked perfectly through the kennels. He did have to be lifted back into his kennel, but he never gave me any issues with picking him up. Poor guy just hates being in the kennel! Per staff on 3/5/24: Skipper was outside near the runs with an ACA and was standing in the gate, not walking in. I got on the ground and called him over and he came, we did this a few times until he got inside. I never met him before and he was super sweet. Per volunteer on 3/3/24: Skipper was an absolute joy to take out today. Didn't pull on the leash, remained medium energy, allowed handling all over and leaned into you for scratches and pets. Had a good dog meet with an older female dog Lilly. I did a behavior eval and made Skipper gold. Super easy to handle, engaged in play but was easy to end. I could also see Skipper moving down to green if their behavior stays the same. I think skipper could be foster eligible and potentially a good event dog based on even-keeled temperament and handleability. Per staff on 3/3/24: Skipper is so sweet. He comes when called and allows all over handling. He leans his head and body into you for more pets, soaking it in. He even gave some kisses to say thank you! Skipper even got to see some dogs through the fence. He sniffed at them curiously with a loose body, but quickly lost interest and decided to keep sniffing around the yard. He did stiffen up when another dog was getting reactive to him, but did not react back. He seems like a sweet, stable guy! Skipper seems like a submissive player. When I started running around he would follow with a lowered body, ears back, and when he would catch up he'd lean his body in and look up with soft eyes. Skipper seems like a submissive player.
