Meet Hazel, a sweet 8-month-old puppy who was found as a stray and brought to the shelter on 9/11. Understandably, she's feeling a bit scared and unsure of her surroundings, but with a little love and patience, Hazel will flourish. She's looking for a calm and caring home where she can feel safe, settle in, and let her true personality shine. Could you be the one to give Hazel the fresh start she deserves? Hazel is currently eligible for rescue, foster and adoption. Head to ACCT Philly any day of the week from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., or email foster@acctphilly.org to express interest in fostering her! Behavioral: Per volunteer on 9/14: SUCH a scared but sweet little lady, learning to trust the world. She cowered back in her crate when I started opening the door. She would come forward for treats but was always scared when the leash or my hand came out. She was just scared but not aggressive at all so I got into the crate to leash her which she allowed, although she was shaking. Sooo scared walking through the kennels, hated doorways and peeked her head around any corner before walking forward. She was very cautious of me the whole time we were out, trusting me enough to take treats but scared with any movements and she didn't want any pets. Seems like she will open up with treats in a quiet home, she's just so terrified in the loud shelter! Took treats very gently out of my hand. Got spooked with sudden sounds and movements. I gave her a few pets on the bottom part of her neck but she backed up so we stopped. I leveled her up to blue based on fear and need to go slow, but a really sweet girl trying to be brave. Per staff on 9/12: BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: Hazel KNOWN HISTORY: Stray KENNEL PRESENTATION: Hazel is being housed on a crate currently due to space. WHen the handler approached she looked up with wide, scared eyes and lowered her body. WHen the handler reached in Hazel cowered away, but allowed leashing easily. She came out on her own slowly once secured. LEASH SKILLS: Pull minimally, very fearful and walked with a lowered body, ears back, and tail tucked HANDLING: When we first entered the yard Hazel was very nervous. The main handler crouched down and gave her some gentle body pets, which she tolerated. The handler gave her some space and went to grab treats, and Hazel followed. She took treats very gently and preferred when the handler was crouched down on her level. She gets very nervous when you approach her fully standing, but will approach you if you crouch down. Hazel got a little frightened of squeaky toys, the sound seemed to startle her. She allowed all handling after some time to warm up and treats. She was still very nervous, and tried to pull her paws back, but tolerated all handling. Overall, she's super shy and nervous, but if you go slow and get down on her level she's very sweet.
