Athena von Holzen is a gorgeous 2-year-old Central Asian Shepherd with a remarkable blend of protective instinct and gentle affection. Known for unwavering loyalty and strength, her breed typically serves as vigilant livestock guardians, but Athena has a softer side, preferring to curl up by a cozy fire while sitting at your feet watching Netflix over patrolling fields. On walks, Athena showcases her calm nature, strolling at an easygoing pace at your side without pulling on the leash. She may not enjoy busy, chaotic environments, but she flourishes in peaceful, serene settings, whether it's basking in the warm sun or taking a quiet stroll through the neighborhood. Following a passing cat-test, both Athena and her friend Hercules proved themselves to be calm and tolerant companions to the felines in a foster home. In playgroups and on walks, they are both friendly toward any dogs they meet. Despite their generally laid-back spirits, Athena and Hercules retain the Central Asian Shepherd breed's innate suspicion of strangers, so they will need owners who are experienced with the unique protective instincts of Guardian Breeds. More than just protectors, they are loving and loyal companions to those they trust. Athena and Hercules are a bonded pair, so we would like to place this charming duo together. Rescued from the Inland Valley animal shelter. Weight: 80 lbs IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN Athena von Holzen YOU MUST FILL OUT AN ADOPTION APPLICATION ON OUR WEBSITE: www.sheprescue.org Application link: http://www.sheprescue.org/Application_to_Adopt_a_Dog%20Main.html Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Athena von Holzen, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
