My story

Just say “Cheese!” Hi, there – my name is Cheese, and I’m a 1-year-old, 13-pound Terrier mix (with maybe a little Chihuahua in me, too!).  I’m a sweet – but fearful – little guy who’s still learning how to be a brave doggie in this big world. My brother, Cracker, and I came from a hoarding situation and were rescued by the San Diego Humane Society. Because of this experience, I didn’t get much socialization early on, so I’m still learning how to trust those I meet. All that said, I’m a shy pup who takes a little bit of time to warm up to new people.  But once I feel comfortable, all I want to do is be near you.  At the moment, I prefer females over males, as men tend to scare me, but I am doing much better at approaching and playing with my foster dad and grandpa. But, I love being near my person, chewing on my toys, playing with doggy friends, and sunbathing.  I even make cute little noises when it’s time for breakfast and dinner.  Also in my spare time, I like to steal my humans’ clothes and stash them away in my crate. As for my training, I’m fully crate, potty, and leash trained, but it may take a bit of time for me to work up the courage to go outside. I love my crate and will switch between sleeping inside it or on my doggy bed.  I don’t mind sharing my space with other dogs, but I will definitely need a slow introduction and some time alone.  I’ve already been neutered and don’t have any health issues. I can get startled easily and have slight separation anxiety, but if I’m left alone with toys or doggy friends, I will eventually settle down.  To help manage this anxiety, I am currently on Fluoxetine (~$10.00 for a month’s supply. Price will vary based on where purchased and market value).  Even though sudden movements and noises frighten me, I was doing okay with my previous foster environment with an energetic five-year-old boy and am getting used to my current foster environment in a bustling home. I think I’d thrive with patient and loving owners who would allow me to open up at my own pace.  A confident and calm pup would also help me come out of my shell and help me build confidence on my own! If you have a big heart, lots of patience, and would love watching a shy boy blossom into a happy, confident pup, I could be the perfect match for you. My adoption fee is $400 and that includes spaying/neutering, shots, and microchip.  If you want to take me home, please fill out the form on the website here: https://theanimalpad.org/adoption-application/. ##2280971##

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Cheese, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
