My story

Meet Jack—a 6.5-year-old German Shepherd who came from a shelter in Quebec. Before that, life had been anything but kind. He was seized from a neglectful owner, blind in one eye and partially blind in the other, with the expectation he’ll lose his vision completely in the coming years. On top of that, he arrived with an ear infection so severe the vet called it the worst they’d ever seen. Months later, he’s still recovering. And yet… Jack still chooses love. His ears have the tiniest touch of flop. His face? A perfect mix of puppy-like innocence and old Yoda wisdom—the kind of expression that makes you want to stand between him and anything bad ever again. He leans in for ear scratches, flops over for belly rubs, and nudges your hand gently like he’s reminding you he’s still here. He has such a playful spirit—ball is life, and nothing lights him up like a good game of fetch or just being included in your day. And when it’s time to wind down, he’ll curl up and settle down. He’s content just being near you. Jack is protective of his home and the people in it. He’ll bark when strangers come in, so slow introductions are important—but give him a little time (and maybe a tennis ball or two), and he’ll show you his gentle, affectionate side. Because of his prey drive, he can’t live with small animals, and while he gets along with some medium-to-large female dogs, he’d be happiest as your one-and-only. Due to his protective nature and limited vision, Jack is not a fit for homes with young children. Jack needs someone experienced with shepherds—someone who understands their loyalty, intelligence, and need for structure. His vision makes walks unpredictable at times, and he can get startled, but his fosters have been working hard with positive reinforcement, and he’s making steady progress every day. In a world that let him down, Jack’s ready for a soft place to land. A forever that feels safe. A human who sees him and says, “You’re home.” If that might be you, apply to adopt Jack today. 💛

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Jack, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
