My story

Meet Perley, a 5-year-old Great Dane who came to Big Dog Ranch after being rescued from a Missouri puppy mill. He’s had very limited positive human interaction in his early life and is still learning to trust people. Because of this, Perley is a fearful dog and will need plenty of time, patience, and consistency to feel safe. He’s looking for a quiet, adult-only home with an experienced adopter who understands large, sensitive breeds—especially dogs who need space and time to build confidence. While Perley is not currently cuddly or affectionate, he may begin to form bonds slowly once he feels secure. For now, he’s more comfortable keeping his distance and observing quietly. Perley has a low energy level and prefers calm, predictable routines. He is good with other respectful, low-key dogs, which can help him feel more at ease in a home. Because of his fearfulness, he is a flight risk and requires a securely fenced yard and close supervision during transitions and outdoor time. He’s not suited for a busy or noisy household, and he is not comfortable around children. He’ll thrive with someone who can provide structure, move at his pace, and let him settle in on his own terms. Perley may not be the dog who greets you at the door or seeks affection right away—but with patience and understanding, he has the potential to feel safe and start building trust in a home that meets him where he is.
