My story

Milo ACCT-A-216892 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Milo must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by FRIDAY, MAY 23RD at 10AM. Should Milo's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Milo was surrendered to the shelter on May 2nd due to an intense new work schedule that wouldn't allow his owner to give him the attention he deserves. This handsome boy is now hoping to find a loving new home that can give him time, structure, and a comfy spot to snuggle. According to his owner, his dream home would include a yard, a male dog friend to play with, and a devoted human ready to enjoy his affection and fun-loving nature. While Milo has shown some fearful behavior in the shelter—especially around new people and during handling, he has improved over time. When in playgroup, he was described as steerable and handler-oriented, though still somewhat fearful. Milo is a dog who’s adjusting to big life changes and will benefit from a patient, adult-only home committed to helping him continue to build confidence. Due to his length of stay, Milo is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter. VIDEOS: Play Group 5/6: Milo, Derby, and Storm: https://youtube.com/shorts/jdH4gU4hZXo?feature=shared BEHAVIOR: Per volunteer 5/16: Medium energy. Very sweet and easy to handle. Per volunteer 5/13: Low energy. Very good boy! Enjoyed our run. Per staff 5/6, playgroup: Steerable, exit searching, handler oriented, somewhat fearful. Per volunteer 5/5: Approached the kennel and he had wide eyes standing in the middle of the kennel, took pepperoni gently from my hand. Showed him the leash and came closer to the front, and dodged the leash initially when trying to loop. He sniffed it and then allowed me to loop him. Outside he peed and pooped immediately. I took him into the pen and he allowed me to touch him on his back and side, tail middle wagging slowly to just the left side, ears back, soft eyes. As I continued to touch his ears and paws, his tail would stop wagging and he would move away when I removed my hand. He also did 3 shake offs, all after my touching him. He met Remington through the fence with ears erect and frontal, body facing forward, tail high and either not moving or wagging stiffly. After a few seconds his tail went to middle wagging stiffly, then middle wagging more loosely, and he was sniffing at Remington's face with ears back, gentle pant. Milo showed some interest in the toy, he will catch a rope in mid air and then disengage from it. He also knows sit and paw. He was easy to return to kennel and remove the leash. Per staff 5/5: Able to check in with muzzle and 2 people (one holding and one giving vx's). Per staff 5/5: Unable to leash due to behavior. Lunging, growling, baring teeth, whale eye, hackles up. Defensive behavior noted. Use caution. Per staff 5/4: TTA lunging, attempting to bite – behavior only. Per staff 5/3: Milo was scared during his intake exam. He wouldn't allow restraint or muzzling. Per staff 5/2: Was hard barking at everyone upon approach but had a wagging tail (alert barking). Was resistant at first but once owner left went without issue. Summary of owner surrender notes: They owned him for a total of 5 years and said he is fully housebroken and crate trained. He is medium-high energy, was walked 3 times a day, and would sometimes pull on leash a little. He enjoys bacon and peanut butter treats and would sleep on the bed with the owners or in his crate. He knows sit, down, lay down, no, off, stay, heel, drop it, and leave it. His favorite toys include rope toys, squeaky toys, durable chew toys, and kongs. His favorite activities include exploring outdoors, playing fetch, playing tug-of-war, going for walks, napping, independent playtime with toys, learning new commands or tricks, and snuggling/cuddling with owners. The only behavior concern noted was having too much energy and getting overstimulated. His reaction to strangers depends on the situation, but he is super friendly towards children. His reaction to dogs depends on the situation. If it’s a female dog he will sometimes lunge during walks. He is not aggressive and does not bark but does get reactive in some situations. He ignores wildlife. His ideal home would have a male dog to play with (he has lived with older male dog for a year with previous roommate and loved it), a yard, and loving owner that enjoys his snuggles. Their favorite thing about him is that he has a unique personality and can read you and your emotions very well. Great companion for days you aren’t feeling 100%. MEDICAL: As of 5/10, Milo had shown some improvement on gabapentin, so it was continued. On 5/8, Milo was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on medication. He tested negative for pneumovirus and is scheduled to finish his medication on 5/21. During his intake exam on 5/3, Milo was very stressed. His eyes and nose were clear, his coat was clean, and his teeth had some staining. He was unable to receive his vaccines due to his behavior, so he was prescribed gabapentin to help with his adjustment to the shelter. Due to having diarrhea, he received a  parvo test and fecal float which both came back negative. A direct smear fecal test came back positive for Cyniclomyces guttulatus, a type of gastrointestinal yeast which could have been the cause of his diarrhea. Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted. If you are interested in an animal please contact ACCT Philly immediately. Due to limited space, timestamps may also be proceeded with early so it is imperative to let us know if you are considering adopting or tagging a dog or cat. ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia. We are open for adoptions 7 days a week. Please visit www.acctphilly.org/adopt for details. If you are a rescue interested in pulling this animal, please email our lifesaving team, or visit here if you are not currently a rescue partner: https://acctphilly.org/acct-philly-love-local-partnership-program/ Confirmed placement is considered confirmation of an actual rescue pull. Possible placement, interested parties, and other "TBD" statuses are not considered confirmed and do not indicate an animal is no longer urgent. All animals at ACCT Philly are from Philadelphia, as the only open intake animal shelter in Philadelphia, we are not able to accept animals from outside of Philadelphia. ACCT Philly’s Pennsylvania kennel license number is 08313.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Milo, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
