My story

Nellie is a quiet sweetheart who’s been through a lot but is now learning just how good life can be in a loving home. She arrived at BARCS as a stray and was initially shy, but it doesn’t take long for her gentle, affectionate personality to shine through. Within a day or two of feeling safe, Nellie transforms into a total lovebug—curling up beside you on the couch or resting her head in your lap with a contented sigh. She recently had surgery on a fractured hip (7/1) and is recovering beautifully. She’s already putting weight on her leg and staying her usual calm, happy self. Her recovery is straightforward: no running, jumping, or stairs for six more weeks, plus gentle leg stretches twice a day. Thanks to her naturally low-key personality, Nellie has taken it all in stride. A sling is available to help her manage any necessary stairs.Nellie is about 40 pounds and makes the perfect weighted blanket. She enjoys short bursts of play, especially with her favorite stuffed banana toy, followed by long naps and even longer cuddle sessions. Her energy level is an easy three out of ten—ideal for someone looking for a laid-back companion. She’s done well around cats, other dogs, and children, even very young ones. Nellie is respectful, gentle, and calm, and while she can be a little mouthy in an affectionate, playful way, her foster is helping her learn to redirect that behavior. She is crate trained, mostly potty trained, and eager to please. She can pull a bit on leash and may feel unsure in busy environments, but with continued gentle guidance and positive reinforcement, she’s building confidence every day.Nellie recently stayed in a foster home and was described as the perfect guest. She claimed a cozy couch spot immediately (no shame!) but never wandered or got into anything. She remained calm and composed during potty breaks, even when passing barking dogs, and was unbothered when someone entered the house suddenly with a bike. She even enjoyed a visit to Checkerspot Brewery, calmly watching the Orioles game and napping beside her foster in the middle of a busy scene.Whether you`re looking for a low-key snuggle buddy or a mellow companion to take along to your favorite hangouts, Nellie fits the bill. She’d thrive in a calm, stable environment with kind people who will continue to help her blossom. She could join a home with other gentle pets and respectful children—or be perfectly content as your one-and-only.Nel
