Why is Esmeralda still here? We ask ourselves that every day. Unfortunately, like so many middle-aged, black, pitbull-type dogs, Esmeralda has been overlooked in an overwhelmed shelter system. With thousands of animals entering shelters every day, dogs like her often fall through the cracks. But we refuse to let her be forgotten. Sweet, snuggly, and full of charm, Esmeralda is a gentle soul who’s ready to bring love and laughter into a lucky home. Small in size and big in personality, she’s won the hearts of our staff and volunteers. She recently went on a Saturday adventure to Tuckahoe State Park, where she splashed in the water, rolled in the leaves, and soaked up every second of freedom. She was perfect in the car, loved the trails, and even helped herself to her human’s water cup. Esmeralda’s Best Qualities ✔️ Has done well with kids she's met ✔️ Has interacted positively with dog-savvy cats ✔️ Has shown success with other dogs after slow, proper introductions ✔️ Appears to be crate-trained, housebroken, and familiar with a doggy door ✔️ Knows basic commands like "sit" and "paw" ✔️ Enjoys car rides, walks, cuddle time, and relaxing by your side She’s smart, loyal, and affectionate…everything you’d want in a best friend. Esmeralda has also spent time in a home during our Shelter Slumber Party and was a total rockstar. Her slumber party buddy was so smitten, they even sponsored her adoption fee to help her find a loving home. Esmeralda came to us microchipped from another shelter, but no former adopters could be located. So now, she’s starting fresh and waiting patiently for someone to give her a second chance.
