Socialization/training: Onyx would win the “Biggest Transformation Award” for a rescue dog, paws down! This shy guy, who was terrified of people, has transformed into a lap dog who enjoys sleeping curled up against his humans. Not only has Onyx made huge strides in socialization skills with people, but he has mastered, with time and treats, multiple commands. He knows “sit”, “cookie”, “go upstairs”, “no” is a work in progress. He’s currently working on recall in the yard. He will get distracted if a bird is in his no-bird-fly zone area. He’ll need an adopter who understands that trust comes first – someone patient, gentle and committed to using positive reinforcement to help him continue to grow his trust in humans. Crate trained: Onyx has earned the privilege of free roam. He only goes in his crate for meals and otherwise enjoys having the run of the house. Leash trained: This active boy prefers backyard adventures to structured walks. He’d be perfect for a family with a secure yard where he can run and play to his heart’s content. Activity Level: Onyx is the perfect balance of playful and relaxed! He loves yard time-chasing and being chased by his dog friends, playing with outdoor toys, and soaking up sunshine after some zoomies. Indoors, he’s content with toy play, napping and quality snuggle time with the other dogs or a human. Fence: Physical fence required for this active boy’s safety and happiness. Behavior: Don’t let his small size fool you – Onyx is a champion nighttime snuggler. He loves bedtime and will happily go into a Setter sprawl next to you for the night. While he’s still building confidence with loud noises, he’s becoming braver every day and now turns to his trusted humans or dog friends for comfort and reassurance. Medical History: Onyx has fully recovered from past injuries (a large wound on his front leg and a fracture in his pelvis) and is in excellent health. He’s current on all vaccines and stays protected with monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention. His next Leishmania test needs to be scheduled by 1/16/26. This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80. Foster Comments: Onyx’s transformation has been amazing to witness! He’s learned that humans can be a source of love and comfort, and not pain. He now seeks out both his dog friends and trusted people when he needs reassurance. His ideal day includes yard time – whether that’s sunbathing, playing with toys, romping with other dogs, or enjoying lap time with his foster family. A perfect home for Onyx would include: a friendly, playful dog companion, bed privileges (he’s an excellent sleep buddy), a quiet household without small children, patient family members who understand that building trust creates the strongest bonds and a secure yard for safe play and exercise. Onyx is a hidden gem who just needs the right family to help him shine! Foster Location: Schaumburg, IL Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $75.00 for the required Certicate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI). Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either y their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions. ##2365394##
