My story

*Courtesy Post This is Ari! She’s 7 months old and looking for a home. She seems like she’ll be on the smaller side for a husky. I'm a veterinary student at K-State and moved to Kansas from Arizona to go to school. I rescued Ari from the AZ Humane Society while home over winter break when she was out of time for medical reasons, and have been caring for her ever since. She was found as a stray at ~8-9wks old weighing only 5lbs and was very malnourished. Ari was diagnosed with a condition called PRAA - persistent right aortic arch - meaning that her aorta, which usually forms on the left, for her, developed on the right. The biggest issue this caused was megaesophagus because the aorta wrapped around the esophagus; as a result, she couldn’t keep food down once she transitioned to solid food. Until she could have surgery, she needed to be fed a slurry of wet food with water and held in an upright position for 20-30mins to keep food down without regurgitating. She slowly gained weight and got her puppy energy back! Funds were raised and she was able to have surgery here at K-State, which removed the constriction on her esophagus to make eating easier. She has improved significantly since that surgery! She now eats moistened, softened kibble from an upright feeder. If she eats too fast, sometimes you will have to take it away to make her pause halfway through, but most of the time she does just fine on her own. Ari is a super affectionate, happy girl who loves to play with other dogs. I have 4 huskies of my own and she thinks she is one of the big kids. She will do best in a home with another active, playful dog and a fenced yard. She has gotten a bit more energetic as she has grown up, and she pulls more on a leash now. She is fully house and kennel trained and sleeps in a kennel in my room at night. *Courtesy posting is a service RCHS provides to our community members who need to rehome an animal. This animal is not with RCHS and all information is provided by the animal's current guardian. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please fill out an application here: http://www.rchsks.org/our-animals/adopt-a-pet/adopting-a-dog. If you have any questions, please email info@rchsks.org

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Ari *Courtesy Post, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
