My story

Bubba - Redtick Coonhound Mix - male/neutered - Adult: 5 years of age (6 in November) - 63 pounds - pale red short coat with white ticking on nose and legs Bubba’s heartfelt desires are simple and basic. These are words that could pretty much be used to describe Bubba himself, and indeed, most hound dogs. If Bubba were a car, he would be a manual transmission, no computers, and bench seats. Bubba craves love and closeness, a soft place to snuggle with his own treasured blanket, and a fenced yard where he can freely roam and amble about, secure in the knowledge that he is safely protected. And he needs the understanding that despite being a solid and sturdy dog whose breed is among the most stoic of all dog breeds, Bubba is a sensitive, vulnerable guy. Bubba came to rescue care pretty well wrung out. His foster care providers recognized that he was on his last nerve and responded with immediate medical support, consistency, reassurance, and calm faith and belief in Bubba. Bubba has flourished in this atmosphere of love and, best of all, reflects these qualities that nourished him. Bubba is a champion cuddler and loves to snuggle. His consummate skill at napping might initially alarm someone who is not used to this houndly talent, and fears that Bubba has expired. He loves to be under blankets, and he loves to create a nest from blankets. He would enjoy sleeping in the bed with his human(s), but will happily sleep in his crate. Bubba’s house training is impeccable. He has mastered two important cues: “sit” and “crate”. Bubba’s movement style seems at odds with his laconic (dare we say - lazy) personality. He appears to be prancing or trotting. He developed this gait out of painful necessity. He came to us with nails that had been quite neglected and grown far, far beyond their quicks. Bubba is a straightforward and uncomplicated dog, and we feel that it is best that we follow his example. Here is what his interested adopters should be prepared to provide: *Understanding and acceptance. Bubba still takes the medication that helped him manage his anxiety, and he may well always need to take it. *He is a homebody. Bubba is a dog who revels in contentment and sameness. He is not a dog who would enjoy walks around town greeting new friends. In fact, he prefers slow introductions to new people from the safety of his crate. In 5 to 10 minutes, his curiosity overcomes his worry, and he has made a new friend. *He is not a fan of car trips. *He endures eye drops and wiping of his eyes, which crust up without care, with fortitude and grace. *He will require professional nail trims. *He will need a securely fenced yard in which he can exercise his body and his nose throughout the seasons. What should his interested adopter(s) be prepared to expect? *Eyes that look directly into yours with hope and longing and joyful expectancy, and absolute love and trust. *A companion who will always be grateful for the smallest, simplest pleasures, and if peanut butter is among them, he will be in rapture. *A dog who has earned this description from his foster mom: “He is loving and calm and the sweetest, most amazing dog.” *A friend who will bond profoundly, and whose faith will never waver. *A dog who has discovered that he is safe and valued, and does not take this wonder for granted. Bubba is neutered and up to date on all vaccines and preventatives. We are seeking an adult home for Bubba, ideally. We will consider placement in a home with children 14 years of age or older. A securely fenced yard is a requirement. If you are interested in adopting Bubba, please complete our nonbinding application: click here to send a non-binding application

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Bubba, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
