My story

Meet Willy 🧡 Approximately 4 years old | 35 lbs | Male | Neutered | Heartworm Positive Willy came to us through our outreach team after spending most of his life outdoors, enduring neglect and frequent attacks from other dogs. When he arrived just three weeks ago, he was afraid of almost everything — but in that short time, he’s made incredible progress. He’s now neutered and has tested positive for heartworms, but Heart of America Humane Society will cover the full cost of his treatment. What Willy needs now is a family who will help him continue healing — emotionally and physically. He’s discovering the comforts of indoor life: soft dog beds, quiet routines, and the joy of having a dog friend. Willy would do best in a home with another dog — he’s very submissive and takes cues from his foster sister. At night, they sleep peacefully side by side. Willy still struggles with trust. He spends most of his day under the dining table, where he feels safe, and only ventures out when the day winds down. But he’s slowly coming around, and you can see how much he wants to connect. His foster uses gentle encouragement (and treats!) to help him feel secure. He’s very treat-motivated and now expects a little “cookie” after going outside — he even knows the word! He also takes his meds like a pro, especially when wrapped in cheese. When someone is home, Willy is calm and relaxed. He does need to be crated when left alone, as he’s been known to redecorate with shredded pillows and beds (the last decorative pillow didn’t stand a chance!). Willy’s heart may be hurting, but it’s open and hopeful. With patience, love, and a steady dog companion, he’s going to make someone an incredibly loyal and gentle best friend. 💛 If you think you might be his person, reach out — Willy is waiting.
