My story

Bukbuk ACCT-A-223465 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Bukbuk must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER, or ADOPTER by Thursday, July 10th, 2025 at 10AM. Should Bukbuk’s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. BukBuk is a sensitive and affectionate boy who was surrendered to the shelter on June 20th alongside his canine companion, Momma, after their family moved into non–pet-friendly housing. Having spent his life in a loving home, BukBuk struggled deeply with the overwhelming shelter environment. His adjustment was slow, but with Momma by his side, his sweet personality began to shine through. When BukBuk first arrived, he was terrified—pancaking in his kennel, trembling, and showing signs of extreme fear and stress. Over time, and with the help of patient staff and volunteers, he began to warm up. In quieter settings and with familiar people, BukBuk transforms into a gentle, affectionate companion. He enjoys curling up in laps, seeks out attention, and loves gentle petting. Once comfortable, he shows off his silly, endearing side and even responds eagerly to his name. BukBuk is very bonded to Momma and finds great comfort in her presence, especially when adjusting to new spaces. He has shown improvement walking on leash, particularly in quieter areas, and is housebroken, crate-trained, and knows commands like "sit" and "paw." While he has come a long way from the shut-down pup he was at intake, BukBuk can still be wary of new people, especially men, and has occasionally growled when startled or unsure. Because of this, he is looking for a calm, adult-only home with experienced adopters who can move at his pace and provide the patience and consistency he needs. BukBuk is a truly special dog who just needs the right environment to continue building his confidence. In return, he’ll offer unwavering loyalty and affection. If you’re someone who understands the value of going slow and letting a dog bloom in their own time, BukBuk just might be your perfect match. He showed low to medium energy levels and appeared more fearful outside than inside the shelter. However, he becomes more comfortable and relaxed when he's out with his canine companion, Momma, who clearly helps build his confidence. Per volunteer 7/01/2025: I had BukBuk out for some time today! He’s now cold club so we had to go out the back door. BukBuk was standing at the front of his kennel with soft eyes, mid tail wag, and a loose body. He allowed me to leash him with no issues and then hopped out of his kennel. I had no issues walking him through kennels to outside. Another volunteer brought Momma out and they both were happy to see each other. BukBuk is a really sweet affectionate boy. He remained loose and wiggly the whole time in the yard, soliciting attention from me. He would come up to me curl into me and allow all handling. At times he did jump up on me he could be easily redirected. He knows his name very well and if we called him over he would come over to us. His fearfulness has definitely improved and I didn’t see any signs of fearfulness with him. Per staff 6/30/25: Visited BukBuk in his kennel today. He was completely sound asleep & did not react when I called him name or whistled. He finally opened his eyes & immediately sat up to look at me but started growling. he low growled the entire time I stood there. i tried talking to him gently but he continued to growl. He never showed teeth or tried to bite but growled almost consistently Per volunteer 06/29/2025: I had BukBuk out for some time away from his kennel. Outside he is still pretty nervous on leash but inside he has warmed up really well to me! I had him in the volunteer room where for the most part he laid in my lap drifting asleep occasionally. A male staff member walked into the office and he did give a few low growls but that was it. Other volunteers walked in and he did not react. He would watch them move around the room but he did not growl at them. After a little while BukBuk got up and approached another volunteer who lightly pet him on his back and he allowed her to do it with no issues. He then walked away and came back to me. He is very handler oriented and did stick close by me but would adventure off occasionally. He took treats out of our hands and even gave me mid/low tail wags. The male staff member that he previously low growled at was able to give him treats and BukBuk did not growl at the staff member again. BukBuk approached the staff member with no issues. He may have been startled when the male staff member came in. BukBuk allowed all handling with me and was very tolerant. Returning him to kennel I had no issues and he hopped right in. Per volunteer 06/25/25: I got permission by the behavioral team to take out BukBuk with another volunteer. Approaching his kennel, BukBuk was laying underneath of his Bed trembling in fear, we lifted the bed and he came to the front of his kennel and pancaked himself down. He allowed the leash to go over his head and once leashed with a little bit of leash pressure he hopped out of his kennel. He started to walk but then put the breaks on and started to pancake and back up. He had whale eyes and a stiff body out of fear. Because he was trying to back up under the kennels we decided to loop him under his belly so he wouldn’t hide under there. Again he began to walk but then quickly pancaked. We decided to walk him back to his kennel. I then got out Momma who came in with him and is in the kennel next to him. Once he saw her he hopped out of his kennel with a loose body, soft eyes and a mid wagging tail. He approached her and gave her kisses on the face. I started to walk Momma and BukBuk and the other volunteer started to follow. Again, he stopped and started to pull back on the leash towards his kennel. The shelter was very loud at this point and the dogs around him were barking which I think made his fearfulness go up. We decided to put him back in his kennel and try from the back side as it is more quieter back there. A staff member who brought him in saw us with him and offered to help as she said that he walked when her and another staff member had him looped together. She looped him around his belly and her and the volunteer and BukBuk began to walk and follow me and Momma. We walked him through the med hallway into the regular hallway. Once BukBuk didn’t hear any dogs he relaxed so much and began walking with just the volunteer and following Momma. His body wad loose, his eyes were soft. Once Outside BukBuk used the bathroom and he seemed to be housebroken. He is very attached to Momma and followed her anywhere she went. We took him into the volunteer room and he was great! He greeted us with a loose body, low/mid wagging tail, soft eyes. He came over to me allowed all handling, came and sat in my lap. He solicited attention from me. He was a different dog out of his kennel. He took fresh pet from both of our hands. We had no issues from him. At times he would go under the table but I would call him out and he would come over. At this time we still had Momma with him and her being Relaxed with us definitely helped him. Going back through the kennels we walked him back in the kennels and we had no issues he followed Momma and hopped right in his kennel. Per staff 6/24/25: Sat with him for ~20 minutes. Found him as per other memos shaking and trembling, laying flat, eyes wide and pupils dilated. Took some canned chicken pieces - but eventually, and with coaxing. Tolerated gentle pets on the head. Was able to leash him but he resisted coming out of the kennel, shoving his head underneath his water bucket. Attempted to guide him out the other end of his kennel, but that didn't work either. He allowed me to remove the lead without issue, I left his blankets on the opposite end of his kennel in case he preferred resettling there (away from the noise/traffic of the kennel aisle) and pinned up blankets on either end of the kennel to reduce distractions and (hopefully) noise. Per staff 6/23/25: Laying flat pancaked in kennel shaking and trembling, lip licks, whale eye, immobile. Slowly got the leash and waited for him to come out which he did, very tentatively. Tail tucked. Immediately returned to kennel: high FAS, recommending medication. Per staff 6/20/25: Use caution when handling animal . Previous owners stated that dog has never been walked on leash ever. When trying to get dog to kennel it would put the brakes on and pancake . was able to check in using a muzzle for safety of patient and handlers . animal seems to be shut down out of fear.
