My story

Meet Penny Lou – A Gentle Soul Ready for Her Second Chance When Penny Lou first arrived, she carried the weight of her past like a shadow. You could see it in the way she kept her distance, the way she flinched at sudden movements, and the way her eyes always seemed to be searching for a sign that she was finally safe. It’s clear she’s been let down before—by people who didn’t treat her with the kindness or care she deserved. But despite everything she’s endured, Penny’s heart still hopes. And slowly, day by day, she’s beginning to trust again. She is not the kind of dog who will run to greet you or smother you with kisses on the first day. Penny needs time. She needs quiet, patience, and someone who understands that love—real, healing love—moves at her pace. But if you give her that, she will give you everything in return. She’s about 3 years old and 48 pounds of gentle, quiet resilience. She’s housetrained, walks beautifully on a leash, is crate-trained, and rides calmly in the car (though she may need a little help getting in). She loves tennis balls, soft voices, and the comfort of a familiar couch. And once she trusts you—when she really lets you in—she becomes the kind of dog who leans her head against your chest, settles in beside you, and sighs like she finally knows peace. Penny is currently living peacefully with a cat, and while she may not be best friends with every feline, she’s shown that she can coexist quietly and respectfully with calm, confident cats. Penny has also shown signs of being dog-friendly with slow, proper introductions. What Penny needs isn’t complicated: A soft place to land. A kind, patient person who will let her unfold in her own time. A home where she’s not rushed or pushed, but simply loved—quietly, consistently, and completely. If you’ve ever looked into the eyes of an animal who’s survived something hard and still chooses to try again, then you’ll understand Penny Lou. She’s not perfect, and she doesn't need to be. She just needs someone to believe in her. Please consider opening your heart and home to this beautiful girl. She deserves to know what it feels like to be safe. To be loved. To finally be home. To learn more about Penny Lou or to meet her in person, please contact the foster coordinator at 336-937-1867 to be put in touch with her current foster.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Penny Lou, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
