Hityde is a quiet, thoughtful fella who’s still learning that the world can be kind. He’s enjoying his time in foster care – and we are learning so much about him! Hityde has shown to be housetrained and a smart cookie – he knows sit, come, stay, wait, and okay. He also walks well on a leash! His foster is working hard on developing structure and a schedule for Hityde- setting him up for success! Any potential adopters should be dedicated to keep up a schedule for Hityde too. This sweet guy arrived as a stray at the shelter on July 16th, with several wounds on his face. He could be a little stiff with handling, but made great progress, leaning in for pets and following his person closely when he feels unsure. Hityde seems to find comfort in food and familiar faces, and he’s beginning to show his gentle, trusting nature. Hityde is looking for a calm, understanding home where he can continue to feel safe and supported as he comes out of her shell. Email foster@acctphilly.org to schedule a meet with Hityde today! He listens to "come", "wait", "up" (for car), and "sit". He is a curious little guy as we adventure the city and a nature trail. He peeks into doors and sniffs at what interests him. He is non reactive to other people (singular or groups) and animals. We saw a stray cat, passed by a lunging tiny doodle dog behind a fence, a big retriever dog passing by who showed interest in Hityde during our hike - Hytide just walked by them without a care in the world. During brunch at an outdoor cafe, a sparrow landed at Hitydes feet. He just watched it quietly and then decided to ignore it and take a nap. Hytide didnt bark once during the entire trip. He loves food because it gets his attention but he was very polite as I ate. No jumping, he'd sniff the air for a few minutes sneaking me a glance, but then would lie down at my feet and nap. He is very cute when he walks - Hytide trots. On the leash there is no pulling. He follows me wherever I go. I can give him the command "wait" and he will stop and wait. He will look at me to say "okay" before he continues walking. Same with taking treats! He is highly trainable. He does play - at the end of the day I took him to an empty field where I could run and jump around with him with and he responded happily. - His comfortability with me was earned. I had to build that trust with him from the start. When he was very nervous, tail tucked, some shaking at loud noises - I gave him space, water, and treats. I took him to a hiking trail where it would be quiet and few people and dogs to encounter - l let him choose to follow me as I took the lead. As he started to feel safe with me, he became more curious, and active, I decided to take him closer to a city environment. He passed by a loud rumbling ice cream truck and heard the train pass above us in Fishtown. He was totally chilling with his posture relaxed and tail wagging. I know he trusted me to keep us safe. A potential adopter should understand he needs patience and give him time to settle with a new person to get to know them a bit more before he can feel comfortable showing that puppy side of him. Per staff 7/27: Hityde met 2 dogs, no interest in them, lip licking when they got close. Got him to sniff a little but he was clearly uncomfortable. Priest came out and he actually showed some interest but Priest is very pushy, so we didn't do a formal meet with him. Per volunteer 7/23: In/out kennel no issue. The longer he was in yard he would approach but not solicit pets. Easy walker, some anxiety w/ noise. Per volunteer 7/19: Easily leashed and retrieved from kennel with a bit of baby talk for encouragement. Walks well on leash. Non-reactive to other dogs on leash even in fairly close proximity. Head shy. Accepts pets with stiff body. Sits well. Takes treats very gently. Seems very food motivated and will follow handler around for treats. No interest in toys or playing. Put on breaks when in front of kennel door. Attempted to step in with him but didn’t move. Threw treats in and attempted to step in again, he followed the treats in. Per volunteer 7/19: Not interested in other dogs but not aggressive. Sweet, shy boy within a few minutes he started to trust. Per staff 7/18: Nonreactive but timid meets w/ Tyra and another male dog. Per staff 7/18: Allowed handling as needed but very nervous. Very food motivated, took treats readily. Per staff 7/17: KENNEL PRESENTATION: HiTyde was laying down in the front right corner of his kennel. He looked up when approached, when the kennel door opened he remained lying down. The leash was placed over his head while he sat very still. As the leash touched him his head lowered a little bit. LEASH SKILLS: HiTyde stood up once the leash was on him. With slight pressure and prompting with a low voice and patting the ground, HiTyde moved closer to the door. He stepped out of the kennel when treats were presented. HiTyde has a nice neutral walking pace. He walks with a small bounce in his step, a mid level head with forward ears, and a mid slow wagging tail. HiTyde returned to his kennel without hesitation. HANDLING: HiTyde allowed handling all over including the sore spots on his ears face and neck. When there are sudden movements or sounds, HiTyde will walk close to his handler and at times stand behind with a low head. HiTyde took treats gently and looked towards his handler when they stopped petting him, he leaned in when getting pets. PLAY: Not at this time. TOYS: Not at this time COLOR LEVEL & ANY RECOMMENDATIONS: Blue Per police 7/16: Found white pitbull tied to sign. Just timid, scared. MEDICAL: Per staff 7/21: All bite wounds on face, neck, and forelimbs appear to be healing appropriately. Single puncture wound at base of left ear began to bleed during exam, but there is a healthy granulation bed present. Continue abx and NSAID as prescribed. Ok to make available for adoption w/ a medical waiver. On 7/21, Hityde was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection (URI) or "doggy cold" and started on medication. He tested negative for pneumovirus and is scheduled on doxycycline until 8/3. Per staff 7/18: Bite wounds scabbed and healing appropriately. Wound on R maxillary region partially scabbed, otherwise has granulation tissue. Continue clavamox, gabapentin, rimadyl. During a triage exam on 7/16, Hityde took canned food gently and drank small amount of water. He had very minimal dental calculus, a high flea burden, and diffuse but mostly superficial, fairly fresh wounds to his head and face which were suspected to be bite wounds. There was a larger wound on his right lip. He allowed all handling and ate meds in a meatball. Per staff, “Suspected bite wounds to face and head. Approx 1" cut on R lip is still oozing later in day - will need to be assessed by Dr. Had soft stool with black rubber foreign material while in kennel in PM. Parvo negative. Fleas, underweight. Pt scared in kennel. If he is having continued issues with FAS, may need to increase/add to anxiety meds. Plan: Start courses of Gaba, Carprofen, Clavamox. Gave capstar and checked in. After abnormal BM in PM, placed monitoring slip and scheduled course of fortiflora. On vetcheck for tmrw.” - Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
