Wednesday (or Wens for short) was surrendered to the shelter on July 31st, 2025. Concerned for her well-being, her owner made the difficult but protective decision to surrender her for her own safety. This one-year-old girl has been nothing but sweet and eager since arriving. Described by her previous family as fully housebroken, high-energy, and extremely friendly, Wednesday thrives on human attention and affection. At the shelter, she’s shown a playful, gentle side, and continues to win over volunteers with her curious nature and love of people. Though initially startled by loud noises, she recovers quickly and continues exploring with confidence. Wednesday enjoys treats, gentle pets, and even a little light ball play, making her an all-around delightful companion in the making. Medical Notes: Per an exam on 8/4: “Check right eye. Per surrendering owner, dog was "born that way" Objective: -OS WNL, OD microphthalmia vs phthisis bulbi OD. Unable to evaluate globe due to degree of blepharospasm, even after applying proparacaine. Eye is clearly uncomfortable -Abdomen is tense, no obvious abnormalities -Excellent body condition, very sweet girl Assessment: -Microphthalmia vs phthisis bulbi OD” On 8/3: Wednesday was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection. She tested negative for pneumovirus. Per an exam on 7/31: -clear discharge coming out OD and eye is shut -Ears have slight debris -pink tacky gums, stained yellow at gumline -BAR, friendly, easy to handle, likes hot dogs Behavior Notes: Per staff 8/6: “Took Wednesday out for a walk and she was very jumpy at the kennel and eager to get out, I leashed her easily and she came out with a wagging tail and looking to solicit attention. Once she came out she pulled slightly but not much at all. She was so eager to run to the cold club yard and did bark once at another dog that passed by. Once she was in the cold club yard and we were playing with a toy she would jump up and mouth my shin and my elbow because she was so excited. She did the same to another staff member and we redirected her easily with a toy and treats. Returned to kennel easily and was very sweet to us” Per volunteer 8/2 behavioral eval: “Kennel presentation: Wednesday was laying down when I approached her kennel. She got up and walked to the kennel doors and then stood on her legs and put her paws up on the kennel doors. When I open the kennel and slid my leash in, Wednesday got down and was easy to leash. She hopped out of her kennel and then a sudden noise from someone working nearby startled her as she quickly moved to the side and lowered her body a bit looking in the direction of the noise. She then continued to walk through the kennel and around a group of people. She greeted another volunteer, sniffing their hand and doing little hops. She got a couple of pets and then continued. Leash Skills: Once we got outside into the grass, Wednesday peed. We loose leash walked with none to minimal pulling. She stopped for a few more pets from people and then we continued. I noticed that when Wednesday got up from her laying down, her right eye was mostly shut. I looked at it a bit closer when we stopped for pets and walked and it remained mostly closed. Wednesday was squinting and there was a watery discharge on her face. I put in a medical check note when I returned her to the kennel. This did not hamper her walking or visiting with others. (See video - "Wednesday on a walk and licking a treat") Sociability: When petting Wednesday all over, her ears were up and folded in half as she looked at the parking lot, where there were several noises (cars, people talking, etc). Wednesday stood still, tail stayed low and straight down; her tail was not tucked or wagging. I offered Wednesday a treat and she sniffed it and licked it gently and left it in my hand. (See video - "Wednesday on a walk and licking a treat") She was later offered cheese in the adoption center from a staff member, which she took gently. I then offered her a treat I had and she did not take it. The staff member gave a volunteer and their spouse cheese as they were looking to adopt a dog. We asked for a sit and Wednesday did not sit. Wednesday took the cheese gently. Wednesday stood while the volunteer and their spouse pet her back and scratched her ears, again with a low tail, straight down and then ears up and folded looking around at others. (See video- "Wednesday enjoys treat and pets from others") Play & Toys: In the adoption center, the volunteer's spouse offered a ball to Wednesday. Initially she did not play with it. She laid down on the floor a couple of feet away from us for a few minutes. (See photos) When she got up, I offered the ball to her again and rolled it to her. She picked it up with her mouth and laid down with it for a moment. She then pushed the ball away with her nose and I leaned to get it (I was also on the floor). When the individual got up to get it, she stood up and walked over to him. She did not play with the ball again. (See video- "Wednesday plays with a ball") Dog interaction: We did not interact with any dogs during our time together. We did walk by the play yard where there was a dog at a distance. Wednesday stopped for a minute and looked toward the dog in the yard with a neutral body. Returning to kennel: Upon returning to the kennel, another volunteer was next to us with a treat. Wednesday stopped next to her to see what she had. The volunteer put the deli meat into Wednesday's kennel and she hopped right in. She was easy to unleash.” Per owner: “She's very friendly but very attention seeking. High energy, just she gets playful and don't know how to stop it, overly playful. Eye not sure birth defect. Friendly with any person, friendly with children, scared with cats and dogs.
