My story

Meet Henrik !! ➡️➡️Looking for FOSTER or ADOPTER ⬅️⬅️ Henrik has a ton of potential but we don’t have him in the right foster home. We did what we needed to do to save him from being euthanized at the shelter but the foster family isn’t shepherd savvy enough to help this sweet boy make progress. We had him evaluated by a trainer and think we now have a good understanding of the type of home he needs. Please read his post and if you think you’d be a good adopter or foster for him please message us. Henrik is an approx 1 year old, male, German shepherd. He’s a smaller size boy at only 54 pounds and full grown. He is already neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped. He is Heartworm negative. The trainers assessment of him is that he’s a happy young friendly dog. He is very untrained in the manners department and needs to be directed to positive behaviors along with an outlet for his energy. He saw no aggression issues at all but noted that he is mouthy and will grab your hands or arm with his mouth when excited. He made it clear this is NOT aggressive behavior, it’s untrained puppy behavior. The trainer said he is highly correctable and ready to learn. He just needs someone to channel his energy and show him how to behave appropriately. He said he would make an amazing dog for someone wanting their dog to be an active part of their lifestyle. This handsome guy is a going to be such an amazing dog with a little training. He loves outings, games, learning and playing. He also loves some good couch cuddling and relaxing at home. He is shy at first but truly loves people and enjoys any attention he can get. Henrik currently is not having his mental and physical energy needs met. We think once he’s in a home better suited to provide him both, that his training and behavior will all greatly improve. He is very intelligent and eager to learn. He is doing great with potty training. He is also crate trained although he isn’t always a fan of going in. He loves outings and is fantastic in the car. He is still learning not to pull on the leash and can pull when excited but settles down fairly quickly once the walk gets started. He does really love walks and going to the beach and anything that gets his mind going. He also loves fetch and playing. Henrik is generally good with other dogs. He does amazing with the old blind small dog in the foster home. He’s great with calmer dogs that have good dog manners. He has not had any experience with cats in the home so we don’t know how he would do. We also think he would love a playful dog friend but it needs to be one that behaves appropriately around other dogs. He does have issues with barriers regarding other dogs (not people) he will bark aggressively at other dogs from in his kennel or behind a gate but is fine when meeting without a physical barrier. He is good with dogs that meet him appropriately but will get snippy with dogs allowed to run up on him or meet him inappropriately. (Part of this might be related to his Foster having some anxiety and nervousness regarding those meetings. He may be feeding off of that.) This is one of the main reasons we want to get him into a shepherd savvy home or foster as soon as possible. His foster family is great but we definitely gave them a dog that they aren’t fully equipped to train or exercise. Henrik is a very sweet and fun boy that just needs a shepherd savvy family. He needs daily structure and guidance to be his best self. We think in a home with training consistency and proper exercise he will be amazing. We have no experience with him around kids. We don’t think he would be aggressive to anyone but he’s currently very untrained. With the mouthy behavior we think it’s best that if you have kids they need to be over 12 and dog savvy kids. You will need to spend a lot of time working with him and the kids to teach him the appropriate way to interact around them. He needs a family with the time to accommodate his physical and mental needs. He also needs a family that is firm and consistent with his training and routines. He is a sweet boy he’s just never been provided what he needs to be a well behaved boy. ➡️Vet and home checks required. Located in Hampton VA. (He will need to be adopted within a 2 hour drive radius) ‼️Please message VillageDogResource@gmail.com or for faster response (and to see more photos) message ourFacebook Page directly with questions or to get an application. ‼️

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Henrik, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
