Come meet Luke and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (09/07) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Alexandria, VA (3351 Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA 22305)!     Name:    Luke        Best Guess for Breed:   Labrador Retriever mix     Best Guess for Age:    3 years as of June 2025        SEX:    male   Approximate Weight:    49 lbs   Gets Along With:  Other dogs! We haven't seen him with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters!   Currently Living at:   DC area boarding partner   Special adoption considerations: Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think Luke would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure he can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes.   Luke is Looking For:    Luke is a sweet and scruffy 'sato'—a lovable street dog from Puerto Rico—who made his way to South Carolina on a rescue flight, ready to find his forever home. This island boy has come a long way, ready for belly rubs and biscuits. Despite his past, Luke’s spirit is full of joy and resilience. He adores his caretakers and showers them with affection—he’s just waiting for the chance to pour all that love into a family of his own. What do you say, can you provide Luke with a loving home and a chance to make new puppy friends?  What My Peoiple Say About Me:  Staff at Luke's boarding spot say he does great there! He is very well liked by staff and other dogs alike.    Volunteers have taken him on Dog's Day Out adventures, and loved him. They say he is very chill, taking in all the sniffs and showing good loose leash walking in general simply because he is so relaxed and friendly. He did not react to city noises such as sirens or garbage trucks rumbling by. 'He is just a very gentle and sweet boy.'   Everyone knows one thing - how much Luke loves other dogs! He is very dog friendly and happily interacts and plays whenever he meets new dogs.      Heartworm information: Luke is a truly Lucky Dog. He tested positive for heartworms, but has been treated! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment.
