My story

Meet Penny: A Sweet Soul Seeking Her Safe Harbor "Some hearts just need a little more time to realize they are safe." Penny’s story began in Virginia, where she was found as a stray alongside her sister. Just days before their scheduled transport to NJ, Penny's sister unexpectedly passed away. Penny arrived in January carrying not just the weight of a new world, but the grief of losing her only constant companion. Since then, this 1.5-year-old (estimated), 40-pound Redtick Coonhound has been in a patient foster home, slowly learning that humans can be kind. We’ve discovered that while Penny is the definition of "sweet as sugar," she is a sensitive soul looking for a very specific home where she can truly exhale. The Heart of Penny In the house, Penny is a dream and a "Gold Star" guest. She is fully housebroken and can be left out of her crate during the day without ever bothering a single shoe or pillow. She is quiet, gentle, and has a temperament that is pure honey. Because of her past, Penny is extremely fearful of most people (especially men) and is apprehensive about other dogs. She isn't motivated by food, so she can't be "bought" with treats (we’ve tried just about everything!); her trust must be earned through time, space, and consistency. Penny’s "Must-Haves" to Thrive and Build Confidence: The Sniffary Life: Penny’s love language is the great outdoors. She is at her absolute happiest on a long line, going on "sniffaries" in the woods, or running off-leash in a securely fenced yard. She’d be a perfect companion for a quiet hiker, walker, or runner. Having open space to do what coonhounds do best is when Penny really shines and can release her anxiety, which is essential to her rehabilitation. The 6ft Rule: A secure, 6ft fenced-in yard is non-negotiable. Like a true hound, Penny is an agile climber and will size up a fence if she thinks she can get to the other side! Autonomy & Space: Her ideal home allows her to move between the house and a secure yard at her own pace. This "low-pressure" lifestyle lets her build confidence without the stress of forced human interaction. The Furry Mentor: Penny would benefit from a "people-neutral" dog sibling—one who is calm, confident, and, most importantly, respectful of personal space. Since she is currently apprehensive about other dogs, she needs a companion who won't overwhelm her, but rather one who can lead by example. A Quiet Sanctuary: Because Penny needs a low-stimulation environment to heal and build confidence, she requires a home without young children. A quiet, predictable household is key to her progress. Mature, dog-savvy teenagers may be considered depending on the home’s activity level. Why Penny? Penny isn't looking for a high-traffic home; she is looking for a sanctuary to help her develop confidence, learn that people are good, and blossom into the sweet, funny hound dog she is meant to be. If you are a patient soul who finds fulfillment in the "slow wins"—the first time she initiates a wag or the first time she sleeps deeply in your presence—Penny will reward you with a loyalty that is pure and profound. If you are looking for a project of the heart—a dog who will reward your patience with the gentle wag of a red-speckled tail and the quiet companionship of a loyal hound—Penny is your girl. http://www.coldnosewarmheart.org/dog-application.html @cnwhnj @coldnosewarmheartnj
