My story

Meet Sam! Sam is a sweet, 6 year old, 18 lb Chihuahua / Italian Greyhound mix who is starting over after losing the only home he’s known for the past five years. Originally found as a stray in Arkansas, Sam was adopted by a loving family...but sadly, when his owner had to move into a nursing home, Sam had to say goodbye and begin a new chapter. He stayed with a kind family member for a short time before making the journey to Colorado, and is now settling into a foster home while he decompresses and adjusts to all the recent changes in his life. Despite everything he’s been through, Sam has proven himself to be a truly friendly and loving little guy. He may be a bit confused at first (understandably!), but he warms up quickly and enjoys meeting new people. His previous family described him as very social, and his foster agrees! He’s been nothing but sweet and approachable. Sam walks beautifully on a leash and seems to really enjoy getting out and exploring the world by your side. Sam also does great with other dogs and previously lived with three other dogs. We think Sam would love a home with another dog, but he is also so happy to just be with his people that we don't think it is necessary for him to have a dog buddy. Like many dogs who once lived on the street and had to find their own food, Sam can be a little protective over his food. But Sam's foster let us know that he has done perfectly fine when just fed in his crate or in a separate room. Sam's foster let us know that he had a pee accident the first 2 days home with her, but since then has proved to be potty trained! Sam's previous family shared that he is a bit of an escape artist IF he is left out in the yard unattended. They said he has been known to dig under fences and get out. Because of this, Sam cannot go to a home that relies on a doggy door or one where he would be left alone in a yard (which is not safe for a small dog, anyway!). He should always be supervised when outdoors, even in a fenced area, to ensure he stays safe and secure. Sam will do best with a family who is committed to keeping him as an indoor dog, with leashed walks and monitored yard time as the safest way for him to enjoy the fresh air. Sam would do best in a home where he gets plenty of attention and companionship. Farfel's Rescue feels very strongly that every dog deserves the opportunity for formal, positive reinforcement / force-free training classes that are virtual or in-person. We therefore aren't willing to adopt Sam out to a home that doesn't choose to offer him this training opportunity. Farfel's is happy to provide a list of approved positive reinforcement / force-free virtual or in-person trainers in your area. Sam has been fully vetted and vaccinated to adhere to Farfel's protocol of only adopting out healthy dogs. He has also been neutered to support Farfel's commitment to a future world where dogs are never euthanized for space. Applications are currently being accepted for Sam and can be found at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/. If you're interested in this sweet, cuddly and fun-loving best friend, please fill out our application form completely and submit. **PLEASE NOTE** If you're truly interested in adopting Sam, please be sure to fill out our Farfel's Rescue adoption application found at the link above or at farfels.com. Adoption site applications such as Petfinder and Adoptapet don't provide enough information and therefore aren't useful. Our Farfel's application is the only initial tool that we have to determine a great match for this very deserving dog. We're sorry, but in many cases, we're unable to get back to those that don't submit our Farfel's Rescue adoption application. Thanks very much for choosing rescue.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Sam, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
