I have worked at my local Petsmart for just over two years now and have seen a lot of cats come and go through its adoption center. About a year ago this giant tuxedo cat got brought in and he was the sweetest big lug ever. Even though he was 15 years old I figured with the personality he had that he would be adopted rather quickly. Weeks went by and no one had shown interest in him, I on the other hand had developed quite the bond with him and he would do everything he could to get my attention when he would see me coming and going from the salon. After three weeks of him waiting to find a home I decided I was probably going to be his only hope for a loving home. People normally want younger animals when they adopt but I knew how much this cat had to offer someone if they were willing to give him a chance. Gus ended up being my birthday present to myself. When I got his papers from the rescue I found out that they had pulled him from being euthanized at the shelter where his last familly had dumped him. How anyone could do that to this amazing cat baffles me. He fit in with our familly like he had been with us forever, he was the king of the castle! He went everywhere with us, supervised all activity in the house and would sit with the dogs and groom them for hours. Gus was one of the best things to happen in my life in a while, he always knew when I was down and needed some cheering up. I only got 8 months with this amazing cat and it broke my heart when he passed but the only thing I regret is not adopting him the moment I saw him so I could have had even more time with him. It makes me so happy that I know I did my best to give him everything he could possibly want or need while he was with us. He definately deserved the world. I hope people will take a chance on adopting older pets, yes people have wronged them in the past and may have scarred them in some way but it's up to us to give them the best life that they can have and give them a brighter future with a family that loves them.
