My story

Socialization/training: Fivos is very smart and will respond well to you.  He is treat motivated and learns very quickly.  He is continuing to learn commands, and does well with “come” (when he’s not focused on a chipmunk) “sit” “down”.  Again, treat motivated.  He loves people of all ages, and has been with children 4years to 16 years…will be right by their side or laying right next to them any chance he gets.  He loves kids!  Fine with men and women, just truly loves people and affection.  It’s hard not to just “smooch” him all day long!  Housetraining has been a work in progress, but he almost has it down pat now!  This is very understandable considering he lived outdoors prior to coming to the US.  He will stand up to a counter, but will immediately respond to “down”.  He loves snuggling on the couch with you, and playing with toys or tug of war with his “blankie”  He is said to be approximately 5-6 years old but he has the stamina and love of life for a much younger dog. He can outrun our 3 year old granddog no problem! Crate trained: Yes trained to go in at night.  He does very well in it and won’t soil or make a peep until we wake him up in the morning.  We only use the crate to sleep at night. Leash trained:  We have walked Fivos on the leash, he can pull if you let him….but he is walking very nicely now.  He has not come into contact with another dog or person on a leash… Activity Level:  Fivos seems to have a medium activity level.  He loves to be out running in the yard, so does require outside time rather than being indoors all day long.  He settles down very nicely once he comes back inside, and does have spurts of playtime with his toys.  He also can do his “zoomies” if he is excited… especially when it’s time to eat.  He loves running with another dog whether it be his size or smaller, but is very independent outdoors and his nose is very much to the ground a good part of the time.  He is slightly prey driven (chipmunks and squirrels) Fence: Yes a fence is required for Fivos.  He has tried to climb a chain link 4’ fence with no success, so possibly a wood fence would be better.  He would need at least 4”.  I don’t feel an invisible fence is a good choice for him. Behavior:  A total lovebug!  He is super affectionate, loves to be around you, happy and loving with everyone he meets.  Fivos has the most loving temperament, and truly is a sweet boy. Medical History:  Neutered, microchipped, UTD on all vaccinations and on heartworm, and flea and tick monthly meds.  His foster did find a small lump on his hip and it tested as a mast cell tumor so it was removed.  Pathology rated it as low grade, and his prognosis is excellent as the surgeon got clear margins. This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250 or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80. Foster Comments:  I honestly can’t stress enough what a wonderful boy Fivos is.  He would love a home where he can be with his person(s), fine with another dog, and would probably love children either in the home or visiting.  He will listen well, but will need continued training with his commands and what is expected of him.  Housetraining is a challenge but given time I have no doubt he will pick it up fairly quickly.  Fivos just really wants to please you. Foster Location:  Yorktown Height, NY Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $75.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI).  Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions. ##2351058##
