Jicama is a 1–2 year old, 15 lb Dachshund/Terrier mix who came to DPS from an overcrowded shelter, where he shared a small space with eight other dogs. Despite such a tough beginning, Jicama has blossomed into one of the sweetest, most loyal little companions you could ever hope to meet. From the moment he arrived at his foster home, Jicama showed his affectionate side— he hopped into his foster mom’s lap within 15 minutes of meeting her! Since then, he’s been a total sweetheart and devoted Velcro dog, following his people from room to room. While he enjoys playing fetch, tug-of-war, and romping around with other dogs, he’s just as happy to curl up on the couch for snuggles and belly rubs (his absolute favorite). Jicama is crate-trained, quiet through the night, and wakes up with the family around 7 AM on weekdays (a little later on weekends). His routine includes backyard potty time, breakfast, walks, alternating play and naps during the day, dinner around 6 PM, and another evening walk before bedtime. He’s adaptable, playful, and affectionate—equally up for an adventure or a cozy night in. He gets along wonderfully with the dogs in his foster home, happily playing chase or tug with his canine buddies. He adores people— especially teens and adults— and has also done well with younger kids. Jicama is loyal once he bonds with his family, which means he may bark at strangers or dogs passing by on walks. His foster family is working on helping him ignore those distractions, and he’s making progress. Jicama is still working on housetraining- and we expect this to improve exponentially now that he is neutered! He’s otherwise easygoing, does not dig, and limits his chewing to toys (though slippers can sometimes be tempting!). Playful yet snuggly, loyal yet gentle, Jicama is truly one of those dogs who melts hearts with his soulful eyes and loving personality. His foster family calls him one of their favorite fosters ever, and it’s easy to see why. He’s a devoted companion who thrives on affection, play, and walks, and he’ll make a wonderful addition to just about any home. Favorite Foster Story: “If Jicama ever finds himself in a spot he knows he’s not supposed to be, and we go to chase him out, he immediately flops onto his back and asks for belly rubs instead. Between his puppy eyes and his love for belly rubs, it’s almost impossible not to laugh and indulge him!” Ideal Home: Jicama would love a home with another friendly, playful dog, but he’ll also thrive as an only pup if he gets plenty of attention, snuggles, and walks. His perfect match will be someone who wants a loyal, affectionate sidekick—whether for neighborhood strolls, weekend hikes, or couch cuddles. If you’re looking for a sweet, playful, and snuggly best friend, Jicama is waiting to meet you!September 9, 2025, 11:23 am
