Shota is an elegant 45# dog who is about 16 months old. She came to PUP as a young mom with 2 very young puppies. She has raised a pair of incredibly cute puppies and now she is looking for a forever home of her own. This momma dog was named in honor of Shota, a great Lakota leader in Dakota Territory in the 1700's. The name also means smoke in Lakota, which no doubt reflects her unique color. She is mostly sable, but her face is so dark it looks black. She looks like a shepherd cross but she is much smaller than most shepherds. DNA testing from dogs from the area often shows 15-25 different breeds. Most have some shepherd, husky, herding dog like Aussie and even the biggest dogs often have some Chihuahua in the mix. Something in Shota’s DNA has made her a mid-sized dog who looks like a shepherd. Shota has been an amazing momma to her two babies. She faithfully cared for them when they were tiny, actually moving them twice to get them to a safe place. As they got older she was willing to share even her most valued treats and chewies. She has been sort of the Dr. Spock of dog moms, long on love, a bit short on rules. She has been house broken in her foster home and has not needed to be crated, but she is young and young dogs are known to chew things that don’t belong to them. Her adopter will probably want to crate her until she has earned the right to have free run of the house. In her original foster home she was crated with her puppies and it went just fine. Throw in a treat, in goes Shota. She saw the first squirrel of her life when she moved to Saint Paul, and what a treat that is! She would love to have a chance to chase those little buggers and may even try to climb a tree for one. Rabbits are nearly as interesting. She pulls a bit when she walks on a leash, but that might be because she really wants a bit more walking about than her foster can manage. She would likely enjoy long walks and trips to the off leash park. As always, a tired dog is a good dog. She has not met many adult dogs since she came to her foster home but the few she has met she has approached cautiously and seems interested in playing. She is playful with her human. Shota has been vet checked, vaccinated including rabies, and de-wormed. She has not been spayed yet. That will have to wait until she has not been nursing for at least a month. PUP will pay for her spay if it is done at the PUP clinic in Mendota Heights. Her adoption fee is $375. If you are at least 21 years old and everyone in your household is on board with adopting a dog, CALL 651-645-4370 between 7:00 am and 9:30 pm and we will return your call within 24 hours. If you elect to contact us via e-mail it may take several weeks for us to get back to you. Renters must provide proof that you are allowed to have a 45# dog. If you currently have a companion dog or cat please be prepared to provide a vet reference prior to adoption if requested.
If you have any questions or would like to adopt Shota, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
