My story

Meet Tug !! This guy is such a beautiful boy. Sadly his owners decided he would spend his entire life out on a tie out. We were able to save him from that and he is now here learning how to be a loved pet and not a yard ornament. He is an approx. 3 year old, male Aussie/Border Collie type mix. He weighs 46 pounds and is full grown. He will be neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped as part of his adoption. He is heartworm negative and on preventatives. This poor guy was not given any real home training until her arrived to us. He was just at the end of a tether day in and day out. This breed is highly active and very intelligent. He is learning about indoor life but will need an adopter that understands it is all new to him. All things considered Tug isn’t doing to bad with his manners. In just two weeks he has learned a lot. He figured out potty training very quickly and is doing really well with it. He does fine on car rides. He is mostly crate trained. He wont go in the crate willingly but once in he doesn’t escape, is quiet, and hasn’t had any potty accidents. The leash manners are still not there. He gets very excited and pulls. He will learn he just needs patience and practice. He has done good with most dogs. He loves to play with other dogs but can be grumpy/snappy if another dog runs up into his face or is to dominate with him. He has gotten along with a lot of dogs but there are a few he has not preferred. Does not seem to be a gender issue as much as the personality of the other dog. Tug has never been around cats so we are unsure how he would do. He has not met any kids yet but he is very loving and would likely do well with bigger kids and parents that understand a herding breed. He loves to give kisses and has not been bad about jumping up on people. He has also been gentle about toys when playing with people. He has not shown any aggression with food, treats, or toys with people or other animals. He is still figuring out toys but starting to enjoy playing with them. He loves sticks and playing ball. Tug is very energetic and has a high energy level. He needs a ton of play time each day and then he is super calm and cuddly afterward. He does have that chill side but ONLY after he has been given an outlet for his energy. He will need both physical and mental exercise. If you can not provide that to him every single day, rain or shine, then please do not adopt him. He will not be happy and you will see behavior issues due to pent up energy. These breeds were meant to run 100’s of acres a day herding farm animals so you need to be prepared to provide them a ton of exercise and brain activities every single day. He needs daily obedience work to refine his training and keep him mentally stimulated. Tug is a herding breed. Although he has not shown these tendencies with us so far the breed will sometimes nip at ankles to herd people and children around. If you are not familiar enough with the breed to know the difference between herding and biting then do not adopt him. You will get him labeled a biter and likely put to sleep. Do not adopt a breed of dog you do not understand!! Overall we think Tug has a ton of potential with the right family. He is already learning so much about indoor life and picking it up quickly. With a very active family willing to continue teaching him he is going to be an amazing companion. Vet and home checks required. 6ft or taller fence preferred Located in Hampton VA.
